Last year me and Marymum went to Corralejo in Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands. We decided, since we had never been, to go to Lanzarote for the day. We could have taken the Fred Olsen express (which, as I've mentioned in previous reviews, Marymum was completely obsessed with to the point where I thought she fancied it), but if we had done that, we would have ended up in Playa Blanca. We wanted to go to Puerto del Carmen, which seemed to be where all the action was. So, after a bit of research, we found out about the Princesa Ico, which would take us from Corralejo to Puerto del Carmen in around about an hour. This seemed far better, especially to me, as I like being on boats and the Fred Olsen trip only took about ten minutes, which seemed a bit of a non-experience! I've always believed you get a better tan out at sea too (how sad am I???) so it seemed a better option for me.

Anyway, we had a great time on our trip to Lanzarote, so it seemed only fitting when we went to lanzarote this year, that we should get the boat in the opposite direction this time, just to see how it differed.

So I felt that I should tell you about my two different experiences with the Princessa Ico. The first is my round trip from Corralejo to Puerto del Carmen and back; and the second is the Three Islands Tour we took, which also took in the Island of Lobos.

SO IF YOU ARE IN FUERTEVENTURA AND WANT TO GO TO LANZAROTE...

The boat begins in Lanzarote and drops people off in Fuerteventura, so if you are starting off in Corralejo in Fuerteventura, you will have less time at your destination than you will if you are going in the opposite direction. By the time we reached Puerto del Carmen, we had about three and a half hours to explore the town and do any sunbathing we cared to do.

The boat is a glass bottomed catamaran fully equipped with a multi-lingual tourguide (he did Spanish, English and German) who is full of useless but interesting information about the Canaries and the sights you are passing. The ride is relatively smooth although there is a part where you are in unsheltered open sea which can be a bit bumpy and can result in you getting a little wet if you are sitting on the outside

upper deck. The downside is that the staff insist on taking pictures of you which they then try to flog you, but I have been brought up just to ignore these things, so we did so.

On our way to Lanzarote, dolphins were spotted, so they stopped the boat so that we could have a look at these. Apparently they do appear quite often on these outings, but obviously the staff can't guarantee it!

Once we reached Puerto del Carmen, the guide walked us up to the nearest shopping centre so we didn't get completely lost. He then pointed out from there how to get to the beach and then left everyone alone, instructing us to be back at the boat for about three-ish.

On the journey back on the boat, we stopped so anyone who wished to do so could look through the glass bottom at the fish and feed them. I wasn't interested in this personally so I just stayed on the upper deck and basked in the sunshine. My mum went down for a look and said it had been hard to get in to see the fish and was a bit disappointing.

All in all, we enjoyed this excursion, which is why we decided it would be a good idea to do it again this year...

SO IF YOU ARE IN LANZAROTE AND WANT TO GO TO FUERTEVENTURA...

*Getting to the boat:

Obviously, if you go from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura, you have to wait for the boat to bring the people BACK from Lanzarote before you can catch the boat, therefore you are getting around two hours longer to play with. Realising this, the people behind the Princesa Ico excursions must realise there should give people more options once they get to Fuerteventura. On our boat, the majority of people were doing the Three Island Tour like us, but there were also people who were just going over to Fuerteventura to do their own thing, and also a few who were going to the water park in Corralejo.

But as it was the Three Island Tour I was on, this is what I'm going to discuss in more detail...

Straightaway, this was more organised than the previous excursion. A bus picked us up from outside a hotel nearby to our own hotel to take us to the port at Puerto Del Carmen. It was an early start, eight fifteen I think. There were quite a few pickups along the way, and the tour guide began to talk to us as we drove along. He predictably spoke in Spanish, English and German - then a French person shouted out "en Francais s'il vous plait?" and, to his credit, he made a pretty good attempt at it! When we reached the port, he advised that anyone who hadn't already paid for the excursion would need to pay before they boarded the boat. We'd done so already so headed along to the boat to find it was already busy. It turned out buses had also been organised from Playa Blanca, Teguise and Arrecife. The fact that people were having to pay for their tickets also held up our departure, which was a bit of a pain, but luckily the weather was great so it wasn't a problem.

*The trip to Corralejo:

Once the boat set off, the guide started talking to us again, explaining the timetable for the day, and informing us that a water taxi would be taking us to Lobos (after all, the Princessa Ico would be otherwise occupied taking the tourists over to Lanzarote and back in the meantime). Once again, the inevitable photos were taken, although this time it was slightly more amusing. In order to make us smile, the guy taking the pictures sung off-tune accompanied by a guy dancing behind him, clicking castanets in a way that reminded me of Bez from the Happy Mondays dancing around with his tambourine! I think the whole boat was laughing at these antics.

The guide then informed us that he would be filming the day and if we wished we could purchase a dvd at the end of the day, which would be delivered to our hotels. Me and Marymum rolled our eyes at each other - why would we want such a thing???

The timetable was a little odd - once we left the boat, the first stop was the market in Corralejo, which is quite far from the port. We were instructed we would be taken to the market in a coach and have around about two hours there. On the way back to port to catch the water taxi, we could either be picked up at the market, or at a cafe on the way to the port. Or we could make our own way back to the port. Sounds simple enough, especially since me and my mum didn't really have an interest in going to the market.

Except we had no choice. The guide told us we HAD to go to the market. So even though we had no intention of actually going into it, and although we had different options to come BACK from the market, we had to drive miles out of our way in the coach and then had to walk back to the beach (which was pretty much right next to the port we'd landed at!). That seemed all a bit back to front.

*Lobos:

After our couple of hours in Corralejo, we made our way to the port again to get the water taxi to the island of Lobos, a short boat ride from Corralejo. Lobos is an uninhabited nature reserve which has half a volcano (the other half fell into the sea), a gorgeous beach and some lovely lagoons.

There is one restaurant on Lobos. The guide had told us that if we wished to eat there we would have to make a reservation in advance. They only do two meals - paella or fish (what a choice). The guide also said the restaurant housed the island's only bathroom. Apparently there was a key for the bathroom as it was for customers only. Except the key had got lost so now if you asked to go to the toilet you were given the door handle. The guide warned us not to lose the door handle, or they would probably have to give you the door.

I'm assuming most of that was a joke. I hope.

The water taxi was much smaller than the Princessa Ico and when we went over to Lobos it seemed like we were in a tiny toy boat getting tossed about by the waves. (Not as bad as the way back though). Disembarking from the boat was a little scary as we didn't have a gangplank or anything like that, and had to rely on the boat staff helping us out onto the dock.

Once on Lobos we were basically given free rein to do what we liked. We tried to get away from the guide, who by this time was starting to grate on our nerves. He walked about with his video camera, trying to film us against our wishes and singing off-tune. We went to the lagoons first of all, which were lovely - the water only came halfway up our legs so we went out to some rocks in the middle and just sat in the water for a bit. Later we went over to the beach which was about a fifteen minute walk away and it was amazing. When I tried to go for a swim on the beach in Matagorda, my feet kept sinking into tiny rocks and at one point I fell over on my back and a wave broke over my face. It was a bit scary. When I went into the sea at Lobos, there was lovely smooth sand under my feet and I waded out for ages and never went out of my depth. It was amazing - I kinda wished we hadn't wasted so much time over at the lagoon. Unfortunately it was over all too soon and we had to head back.

*The journey home:

The journey back to Corralejo was far more terrifying though. Firstly everyone was pushing and shoving to get back to the watertaxi, which isn't too safe when the boat is shaky enough as it is, and there's no gangway. The waves were awful on the way back, and everyone ended up inside as they would have been soaked through otherwise - one girl DID stay out on the deck on purpose and was completely drenched!

Once we got off the boat we had to wait for the Princessa Ico to arrive back to pick us up - and that was when the real problems began. There was no queueing system whatsoever, and only after the passengers had disembarked did the guide decide to start trying to order us into one. Therefore no one paid the remotest bit of attention and it was a total free-for-all crushathon to get onto the boat. I think my mum got on about ten minutes before I did!!! The journey back was awful as I found myself suffering from my first ever bout of seasickness. Quite a lot of people seemed to be suffering as much as me, so I think it was maybe related to us suffering such a choppy journey on the water taxi and then having to get onto the other boat again fairly soon afterwards.

On the journey back the guide once again tried to flog us the dvd as well as the photos the staff had taken of us later on. The pictures were six euros each, but if you bought the dvd, which cost 25 euros, the guide informed us you would get the photograph free. The staff ran around the boat trying to match the pictures to our faces and my mum and I were pretty surprised to realise our pic was actually really good - but like hell were we gonna PAY for it!

When we left the boat, we were guilted into paying a tip, which is always a bit irritating. I understand the staff probably don't earn a lot of money, and they certainly entertained us - but I don't like feeling OBLIGED to give them something for it. After all, my mum had already shelled out quite a lot of money for us to actually go on the trip in the first place (its about thirty euros per person just for the regular journey from Lanzarote to Fuertevenura; and I believe the trip we were on was about fifteen euros dearer, so it wasn't exactly CHEAP!) Once on dry land again, we had coaches once again to take us back to our destination; and we got back to our drop off point around about half past six, full of tales to tell about our trip...

SO IS IT WORTH IT?

If you are in Lanzarote and are looking for an excursion which will give you a good level of freedom and let you explore some new places, then a trip on the Princesa Ico is a good idea. If you wish to see Lobos too, then the Three Island Tour is a good idea, as long as you can put up with the guide all day and stand being told what to do at times! However, if you just want a trip to Fuerteventura for the day and are staying in the Puerto del Carmen area (or if you are staying in Corralejo and fancy a trip to Lanzarote), it would probably be best just to pay for the journey there and back, as at least that way you have your own freedom and a more relaxed, less regimented timetable to stick to.

The Princesa Ico had its good points and its bad points, but the excursion made for an interesting day, and I WOULD recommend it. As experiences go, it's certainly one I won't forget in a hurry!
