Situated on the south east part of the beautiful island of CyprusProtaras is famous for its beautiful coastline especially for its renowned beach- Fig Tree Bay, it really is beautiful, and conveniently it is 5/10 minutes from Ayia Napa!
This picturesque resort is very popular with divers with a plethora of diving clubs available. The sea is sparklingly clear and clean making it a real pleasure for swimming and snorkelling as well. The resort is an attractive one with a good choice of accomodation, bars, restaurants,car/bike hire and several supermarkets.
It is not an expensive resort - restaurant prices represent good value for money, there is often free wine with meals in restaurants, entry to the clubs is cheap (and rather nicely includes free drinks all night!)the cocktail prices are about £1 each (watch out these are large and deceptively strong)food is available all day, there are good snack bars lining the main beach.
I recommend scooter hire here which is cheap, and the roads are built to a high standard and we found the driving was of a good standard too, but you must have helmets to abide by their laws. We found the scooter enabled us to really investigate the area - we discovered deserted beaches and bays, out of the way villages with real locals and good old fashioned cypriot dishes, we also took a drive to Nissi beach which is popular but still worth a visit, we also drove up to the Turkish border to take a peek at the deserted city....
There are some good trips available from the boozy barbeques in the hills, and a trip up to Nicosia to the more adventurous cruise over to Egypt or Jerusalem which again were very reasonable, although tiring!
Ayia Napa was only 5 minutes by scooter and we usually went there in the evening as there is a great choice of things to do but we preferred to stay in the quieter resort of Protarus (we actually went on honeymoon to Ayia Napa and had a great time though)There are scores of restaurants and bars to choose from there, the evenings attract a lot of people it does get very busy.
Altogether this resort is suitable for young and old, families or just a group of freinds as it really does cater for everyone and with the versatility the car/bike hire offers - the skys'the limit! One word of caution, being fair-skinned myself, the Cypriot sun can burn easily - be prepared and use sun-protection all the time and a good factor, especially if swimming during the day.
Hope you enjoy it there as much as we did. And if you haven't yet tried a greek meze (a real pig out gastronomic deight of numerous greek dishes in small quantites that never seem to end) Try one when you get there!

hello Whitewiner!
I know why you enjoyed it so much, we stayed there last year and are going back again next month!
My question is: How did the trip to Egypt go? As we want to go while we are there this time. And would it be safe to take a 9 year old?
I would be most greatful if you could let me know before 26th june 02.
Great op by the way!
Carol.
