Having stayed here twice previously when 'grumpy teenager' was younger I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was still in the brochure and that we could pick up a week in October half term for less than £900.00.
Location
Just a few minutes walk from the delightful little harbour area of Cala Bona. The resort itself is quiet, with just a few really good restaurants set by the water and a couple of bars. The promenade leads directly to its noisier neighbour Cala Millor, but it is still a pleasant walk, very flat, clean and well kept, ideal for the less mobile. It's lined with cafes and bars all the way up, so plenty of opportunity to rest! The Beach in Cala Bona is split into small areas and is well maintained with sun beds and brollies to hire. Personally I prefer to travel to other coves as we like to snorkel and the last time we tried there was far too much sea weed.
Apartments
There are numerous blocks of apartments scattered around three swimming pools, its well spaced out (can be easy to get lost) and is beautifully kept. The gardeners work constantly to keep the areas looking their best. The majority of the apartments have a pool view, with others overlooking the tennis courts or gardens. It's a good location, peaceful and not crowded at this time of year.
Each Apartment has heating and air-conditioning controlled by you and not centrally, a safe deposit box (extra charge of 2Euro per day) a TV with some BBC channels and a telephone.
We took a one bedroom apartment and 'grumpy's bed was the large sofa in the lounge area. It was fine; he was quite comfortable which considering his size was quite lucky. My main problem with the set up was the so called self catering facilities. In between the bedroom and the lounge was a sink, draining board, two cooker rings a fridge and a cupboard. Ok so maybe I have been spoiled by staying in villas with full kitchens, but this was 'something else'! There was no room to make a snack, let alone cook. It wasn't too much of a problem as we intended to eat out, but even making toast in the morning was a nightmare. The worst thing was (I can't blame the Floriana for this) was there was a dreadful storm on our last night and we didn't think we would be able to get out, I am sure we would have starved if we had not braved the weather! If you treat the apartment as somewhere to rest and sleep it is great I seriously doubt that anyone could manage to cook meals in that tiny space.
Still the bathroom was large and well lit, with a huge mirror opposite the toilet!! Nice.
Cleaning
The apartment is cleaned 5 times a week but they don't always tell when so you have to decide whether to risk using all the towels in one night. As usual Spanish towels are not quite the size of ours. Their bath towels being the size of our hand towels and their hand towels being of similar size to a flannel! Our maid was good; everywhere seemed clean and tidy when she had been.
The Apartment blocks themselves are quite open plan the landings are very wide so it is easy to manoeuvre buggies or wheelchairs around. The blocks with five floors had lifts, but the blocks with 3 floors do not. If you cannot manage the stairs it is wise to make sure you have been given the correct block.
Pools
As mentioned there are three pools, two are freeform type and one, oddly, is triangle in shape. During the later months these pools are chilly (freezing actually, but then I am a wimp) we tended to use the one near the snack bar which was handy for drinks. The pools are well kept, with toddler ends, bridges and attractive planting. There are ramps all around, so easy to get about and all kerbs have ramps to make it easy to cross the roads. The pool areas have plenty of sun beds and umbrellas scattered about and lots of natural shade. Apparently in the height of the season any towels left unattended before 9.00am get removed and taken to reception, it would be interesting to see if this actually happens.
A small indoor pool is also available in the later months and a sauna can be booked at reception.
Things to do
I know there are tennis courts as they are in the middle of the complex; again they look well looked after. There is a miniclub for children aged between 4 and 12 and shooting, darts ect for the adults throughout the day. The usual pool tables and table tennis are readily available.
Reception
Very helpful. Details of places of interest, booking excursions, taxis, postcards, stamps and newspapers.
Restaurant
Overlooking one of the pools. It looks light and clean, you can buy tickets for breakfast 8.00euro, dinner 14.00euro, half board 18.50euro or all inclusive 32.50euro from the reception. I have not eaten in there it looks like a typical buffet style and I think it is too expensive compared to the good food down at the harbour.
Overall
Would I recommend the floriana? Yes if you treat the place more like a hotel room and not a self catering apartment. Its good for children, and the less mobile as it is flat, easy to get around and close to the resort. It can be booked through Portland Holidays with flights and transfers included.
