I live in Madrid and I go to the Puerta del Sol once a year, but if you came to Madrid you have to visit it, /is not a special beautiful place) but is the heart of Spain.
Advantages: good food, very cheap Disadvantages: packed at week-ends
accompanied of fried or baked potatoes, salad and good bread. This is more or less the menu of the day (from Monday to Friday) that with drinks and coffee or ice cream costs now 7,6 euros. In the restaurant there are great variety of salads, homemade desserts as panqueques and the most traditional offerings. During the weekend turns out to be almost impossible to enter. The rest of the time is also concurred and always there are a lot of Argentines, what I suppose that is a good sign.
I only need to say to finish that is very central, 2 minutes to the PuertadelSol: ideal for a supper before leaving to take a walk or a lunch when you are shopping. ...
Advantages: Very close to the Puerta Del Sol and Gran Via. Disadvantages: None
I booked our short break through Expedia, who are always good at finding the best deals. Neither myself nor my husband had been to Madrid before, so we had no knowledge of the city at all. I researched the layout mapwise, to find out where the centre was regarding shopping, bars etc. The PuertadelSol seemed as central as we could get.

Not huge, but for a city centre it was big enough. There was a lift to all floors luckily, as we were on the 5th. Our room was large and airy. Satellite TV, air conditioning (a blessing in July), large double bed, plenty of storage and a wall safe. The bathroom was clean and roomy with one of those ...
Advantages: Central location, room safe Disadvantages: Dangerous floors
This traditional hotel is situated in the very centre of historical Madrid. Therefore the transfer time from the airport is one of the least. We took the train into the centre and then walked to the hotel. Without children this is a fairly reasonable distance to cover on foot but it was a bit too far with our small child in a buggy so we would advise a taxi if you travel with children. (I mean from the train station in the centre, not from the airport, as that would be far too expensive.) The neighbourhood of the hotel consists of the Royal Palace, the Opera Theatre and PuertadelSol as well as Gran Via with its traditional shops, fashion centres and big stores. Being at the centre it is also close to the area of museums such as Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia, the restaurants and cafes and the parks and gardens. We used it as a great ...
