A “puerta” in Spanish means a “door”, but “La Puerta el Sol” is not a door, is not an arc, is not an special and commemorative monument.. . is a “Square”, the most known square in the country and there, you can find the kilometre cero, that means that it is just the middle point of Spain. May be the name is due because hundred of years ago, more o less by 1570 there were a castle or a door that was demolished because the town was growing.
Now is the heart of Madrid, all becomes their, manifestations, fairs, meetings, and is a tradition to eat the grapes of “Nochevieja” the 31st of December, following the rhythm of the Puerta del Sol’ clock.
The calle de Alcalá (the most know street in Madrid) is born their, and very close just five minutes walking you can find “La plaza Mayor” and the old Madrid “El Madrid de los Austrias”. So we can say that the Puerta del Sol is the door that open the old town, the Madrid for tourist, chulapas (typical inhabitant), tapas (paellas, gambas, bacalao) tablaos de flamenco.. and narrows streets, palaces, tascas (typical bar) and ¡¡fun¡¡.
Preciados, Carretas, Carrera de San Jerónimo, Mayor, Arenal… are the commercial streets close to the square ,where you can find a lot of boutiques for young people.
I live in Madrid and I go to the Puerta del Sol once a year, but if you came to Madrid you have to visit it, /is not a special beautiful place) but is the heart of Spain.

Nice historical review. I lived in Madrid for a while and went quite often to la Puerta del Sol. You should have told us a bit more about the "life" there. Demonstrations, New Years Eve, Easter Ceremony, Madrids symbolic bear being placed there etc. Those are the things, I remember.
