I stayed in the Puerto Azul in 2002 for 2 weeks HB.
As a single traveller at the time, I looked for anywhere in the travel agents that had none or no single occupancy charge, and this was possibly the best out of what I was offered, all be it an Allocate on Arrival.

The design of the complex is quite unusual I feel, and the best way to describe it is imagine rock with a hotel on the top that keeps growing downwards...ie ... ...when I heard it was Puerto Rico, however the resort is bustling and has ample shops and bars to occupy.
There are if memory serves 600+ steps down to the beach and the flat part of Puerto Rico where all the shops and bars are.
It is quite a nice walk (honestly!) with beautiful views over the bay on the way.
I never even attempted walking back, taxis were only about £2 at the time so hell that got chosen first!.

Having been to Playa del Ingles the year before on an AOA holiday and enjoyed it, I really wanted to go there and was a little disappointed when I heard it was Puerto Rico, however the resort is bustling and has ample shops and bars to occupy.

I also found on the second to last day if you carry on up the hill (steep) and a few steps- about 200yds, is another shopping centre called the Europa. Again, shops, bars restaurants etc - I didn't fancy the walk up but curiosity got the better of me one day and it was quite nice up there.
Back to the hotel - the entrance hall is absolutely fabulous, probably the best ive ever stayed in. Lots of full size palm trees and exotic plants, and plenty of marble. There are lots of lifts in the complex and I had to take 3 to get to my accomodation. because of its situation, a lift can only drop so far before touching rock again, so out you get into another lift..etc etc
The room was very spacious and beautifully decorated compared to other hotels I have stayed in. A small kitchen area is also provided as the compleax also taked self catering or it did then anyway. I also had a huge balcony (15' x 8') or so which had absolutey spectacular views over Puerto Rico and the sea.
Food in the hotel was basic and actually had a first for me on the menu. I have stayed in many hotels throughout my childhood, yet i can never remember sprouts being served at virtually every meal. Don't get me wrong - I like sprouts but not every night! Food was generally lukewarm and very bland - the salads tasted like they had been washed in tap water and was very offputting - in fact I only tried it twice.
There is also a childrens club with all day entertainers for them which looked good for them., and parents. There was also the standard 'excellent' (through gritted teeth) evening entertainment laid on.
All in all I did enjoy my holiday, and have since gone back to GC for more holidays, and am again in 2006. I would recommend the hotel to anyone who is mobile - it really is no good for anyone not unless you hire a car/ taxi everywhere.
