Puerta Pollensa is about 75 minutes transfer from the airport and is located in the extreme north east of Majorca.
The town itself is notable for its extensive harbour with lots of local fishing boats, holiday boats and some bigger cruisers. It also has an excellent beach stretching towards Alcudia. The beach is clean and sandy. It has hamacas and parasols all the way along (2000 charge was 1300 ptas for two hamacas and a parasol per day. You can of course use the beach free of charge. The sea at PP is excellent because the resort is sheltered and therefore the sea is quite calm. It also gets a good breeze which means it is often the coolest place in the resort. For swimming and for childrens safety the whole seafront is very good. The beach also has resources for hobie cats, wind surfing, and the banana.
From the harbour boats are available for charter and there are also glass bottomed boat tours daily. Ferries to Formentor run hourly.
Further towards the North East is an area known as the pine walk. This is tree lined (surprise, surprise) and has small beaches, private landings and hotel lidos to the seaward side and hotels, restaurants and smart shops to the landward side. The whole area is pedestrianised so it is very good for family eating in the evening. Kids can go to play on the beach safely while you wait for food to arrive etc.
Eating out is very varied. There are two Chinese restaurants, and Indian (Kashmir – recommended), Lots of Mallorcan and seafood restaurants (Simbad and Neptuna recommended), Italian and pizza restaurants (Toto, Don Corleone and RAF recommended). For those with deeper pockets I would totally recommend Stay on the harbour and its sister restaurant on the road to Alcudia “C’an Cuarassa”. C’an Cuarassa has a childrens play area to the side of a pretty garden restaurant. A good tip is that as in most places the restaurants and bars on the seafront are usually siginificantly more expensive than the one’s further back.
Hotels and appartments range widely but most seem pretty good. We stayed in the Villa Concha and found the entertainment and the pool very good and it was only 5 minutes from the beach. More upmarket hotels/apartments were the Hotel Pollentia, Bella Mar apartments and Hotel Daina. In the midrange we were told that the Romantica and Pollensa Park were very good.
The town has a market every Wednesday morning which specialises in local food, leather goods, and linen.
For venturing out and about the majority of places to go on the island are away from Puerta Pollensa and therefore it is probably not the bets centre for a sight seeing holiday. It is very close to Cap Formentor which has fantastic scenery – steep cliffs, clear blue sea, white knuckle driving. Although Formentor beach is advertised heavily I would not recommend the visit as it rapidly becomes the most densely populated piece of sand in the area. Other local attractions are the walks especially the Boquer Valley and its associated wildlife.
In summary, Puerta Pollensa is an excellent location for a relaxing holiday with a younger family. It is clean, safe and very pretty. Anyone looking for a cheap and cheerful holiday or a hectic nightlife should look elsewhere.
I went here 12 years ago and loved it! Stayed in a rented apartment on the Pine Walk and it was fantastic to get up in the morning and wander across the pavement to the sea!
