Advantages: A beautiful island Disadvantages: Quiet nightlife
Last year I was planning a holiday for my birthday in September and I had a choice of going to Penang or Pangkor, two islands off the West coast of Malaysia. Having not really known much about either of the islands I asked a friend who goes to South East Asia every year. She recommended Pangkor straight away. And now I can see why...
I was a bit nervous about the trip as I had never been that far before and there were warnings about terrorists. ... ...and that was a comfort to me to be travelling with someone who had a bit more experience than me. Penang
Penang is one of Asia's most famous islands with a natural beauty and exotic heritage have been attracting curious visitors for centuries. It's a place of mysterious temples and palm-shrouded beaches, while literary giant Somerset Maugham is known to have stayed on the island and spun tales about the romance of the white planter in South-East Asia.
Penang today is very much an amalgam of the old and the new city with a bustling port, a heritage city and an industrial base. Penang is the only Chinese-majority state in Malaysia.
