The Archdiocesan Youth Pilgrimage to Lourdes has been running for over 25 years. Every summer more than 300 young people from the diocese make the journey over to the shrine for three things, prayer, service and friendship. after a tiring 24 hour coach journey and arriving £365 poorer everybody is relieved to arrive in the wonderful town. Lourdes is an amazing place which can not be summed up in words, you just have to go to experience it! People come back from Lourdes a different person. They have prayed in ways they would never have done before, worked long hours with those who are sick, elderly and weak, and made some fantastic friends.
The experience of Lourdes is truly undescribable. it is one of the few things which is noticably lifechanging immediately. i went to Lourdes believing in God. But i returned from that week there with a faith i could never have imagined existed.
Whilst in Lourdes the day of a Youth pilgrim begins around seven and duties can run to as late at 10.30. with working hours running this late and social times running even later into the night the early morning wake up calls become more and more tiring as the week progresses. As fatigue sets in, patients grows short and tempers frey and it is not unusual for friends to take "time outs" from each other. But in such a beautiful setting with such an overwhelming sense of spirituality and peace a simple smile says all that needs to be said to bridge the gaps. i don't think thers a place anywhere else in the world where barriers are cast aside, if only for the week. <<<Duties>>>
Push pilgrims in their wheelchairs/voitures to masses/services/processions
Help with meals, washing and changing pilgrims unable to do it alone.
Be there to talk to and keep the pilgrims company.
Take the pilgrims shopping or around the sites if they would like to go.
Cleaning
Smile. Make the pilgrimage as enjoyable as possible for all those on it. we are there for them to get the most out of the experience.
<<Social>> Why pay close to £400 to travel cross country on a cramped coach to work a gruelling schedule of duties and shifts it scorching temperatures? I am often asked this question or ones very similar. I'd just like to rephrase it to the way i see it..... Why miss the opportunity to help people who really need you and trully appreciate your work more than anything? Why miss a genuine chance to give something back to people from your area who have done so much for the world? Why miss the chance to form lifelong bonds with people you would never otherwise meet? plus the sun shines and the tan deepens!! always a good thing in my book! After duties are ended coaches from different areas in the diocese meet up in one of the local bars for guitar playing, song singing, some drinking (frowned upon but allowed, heehee) and dancing through the night. In Lourdes you see people as who they really are. All barriers and masks are dropped and peoples true personalities are on show for all to see. You are given the chance to make some wonderful freinds and see your existing friends in a completely different light. its a truly wonderful experience. I'm sorry if this op has seemed a bit repetitive. I've really tried to get across how amazing the pilgrimage is. and how much the 300 young people give to the pilgrims in Lourdes. I knew at the start that this was an impossible task but i tried my best none the less. Best get back to thinking of fundraising ideas now as i still have a lot of money to raise if i am going to go back to Lourdes this summer. So i hope you have enjoyed reading this op and it has helped you understand the wonder of Lourdes even just the tiniest bit. If any of you have any ideas for fundraising or any ways you know which could help they will be much appreciated. Love an hugd an faith to all. Cortney xxxx
Advantages: A spiritual and uplifting place Disadvantages: shops sell loads of plastic icons
In writing this personal account of my experiences in Lourdes, I must point out that this my personal perspective, and I do not go to any particular church, however, I do believe in God, but I am not a Roman Catholic and therefore have no common religious affinity with the Town of Lourdes..
~~~0o0o0~~~
I also would like to say that this personal acount is of the general feeling and ambience of Lourdes, I am not trying to put forward an argument ... ...an honest overall flavour of the Town...which apart from the normal shops you would expect to see, there is an abundance of religious icon shops ( mostly selling plastic crucifixes and the likes etc...) theres an abundance of hotels of all grades and classes, various eating establishments and watering holes, and an abundance of Hospitals, hospices, nursing homes etc...Lourdes should be on the itinery of all tourists visiting that area...and there ...
Advantages: Motor racing is abolutely fantastic, not too expensive, nice shops Disadvantages: Not really a tourist town, limited places to visit
Pau is a is a large French town, situated next to the Pyrenees. It is the capital of the Pyrenees-Atlantiques departement. It started out as a small village in the 15th Century, then Gaston Febus built a chateau there and the town grew. Henry IV of France was born there in the 16th Century. In the 19th Century, Pau became popular with the British because of its mild climate, but then they transferred their affections to Biarritz.
Now Pau is a university ... ...industry.
The two main reasons to visit Pau are to winter sports, as the Pyrenees are so close, and motor racing.
How to get there
++++++++++++
Pau has its own airport - Pau Pyrenees - which is about a 20 minute drive from the town centre. Ryanair fly direct to Pau from Stansted. It is also possible, and sometimes cheaper, to fly to Toulouse airport, which is about a 2 hour drive away. Easyjet fly there from Gatwick.
I haven't taken any public ...
O.K. don't be too harsh with me people...this is my 1st attempt.
First things first...HELLO!!!! I hope you are all well and warm.
...get on with it.... OK here it is then....
I wanted to share with you my impressions of my day in the Pyrenees....i know, that's really short, but as we were staying a week near Perpignan, it was only took an hour and a half to get there. The "Cambre d'Aze" is the name of a mountain side which becomes ski-able in ... ...Pierre dels Forcats. It is also beautiful in the summer. (but of course, not ski-able).
We went up to St. Pierre dels Forcats a couple of weeks ago. There are 3 shops where you can rent ski's, boots, helmets (for kiddies) or snowboards. The one we rented from is called "La boule de neige". It costs, for a pair of boots and skis (with sticks of course) and for a child 7 euros for a half day or 12 euros for a whole day. I had some, so didn't look ...
My grandmother has organised a pilgrimage to Lourdes every year for the past 37 years and has been every year apart from last year due to ill health. I decided to join her in her conquest as a helper who tends to the sick and elderly during there stay in Lourdes.
If anyone out there is interested in doing this I would advise them to go right ahead no matter what faith you are. The fulfillment you get is unbelieveable.
Before you depart from the ... ...all week. You basically start from this point, it's up to you to make sure they get on and off the plane ok and get there luggage, hotel room key, etc.
At this point your probably saying to yourself that this sounds to much like hard work but believe me when you see a child who is terminally ill smiling it's worth all the hard work.
During the week you escourt this person to all the different processions, the blessing of the sick, the candle light ...
Advantages: Beautiful, peaceful Disadvantages: long...long...way from Calais
This year, we had a three week holiday, most of which was in South France, a week of which was spent an hours drive from the Pyrenees. The area is beautiful, the mountains spectacular. Describing them, I could get lost in superlatives. Just a few hundred metres on the French side of the border, we got out of the car, and climbed some of the way up them. The views were incredible. Where we had lunch, there was a peaceful lake, made by a dam, and had ... ...taken "Le petit train"-originally a workhorse, now a tourist route through mountains, tunnels, and ending high up, with areas to walk around. The area is beautiful, with pituresque villages dotted about, not so many large cities. Only problem-days of solid driving to get that far South from Calais. ...
Advantages: A beautiful place. Disadvantages: None.
Catholic church and the remains of these vast Cathar castles on top of huge hills is astounding.
Ariege is one of the least populated areas of France, and the beauty of the mountains and valleys is astonishing. My breath was taken away by the views from hilltops, and the greenery of pastures that lay in little valleys. This is to me one of the most beautiful areas in the whole of France and lies near the Pyrenees.
Throughout history, Ariege has had its role to play going right back to cave men, and the caves are still there for people to see and enjoy. During Cathar times, Ariege was a refuge for people whose belief was different from Rome, and even in recent history, Ariege sheltered pilots and then smuggled them over the border to Spain away from the eyes of the Nazis.
This is not only an outstanding area from the point of view ...
Andorra is a small principality of 180.6 sq miles in the Pyrenees between Spain and France.
We chose to go there for the day as it was between where we were staying in Spain and where we were going to in France, and we thought we would pick up some cheap booze. Andorra has a different tax system that is what makes wine cigarettes and luxury items so cheap
Andorra is a long thin country with one main road going the length of it with a few miner roads into mountains, mountain villages and ski stations .T he country side is beautiful majestic mountains sparsely covered in grass a few fir trees and an occasional flower with mountain streams tumbling and trickling down the mountainside. Rocky contours with bare rock peaks rising into the blue cloudless sky it is a sunny day the sunlight picking out the snow on the permanent snow fields ...
Advantages: Scenery, perfect for a winter holiday Disadvantages: Longevity is low due to small size of country and lack of alternative activities
--- INTRODUCTION ---
Andorra is one of the smallest countries in the world with only 181sq. miles of territory in which 60,000 people live. It is a landlocked country 'sandwiched' in the Pyrenees between France and Spain. It has recently taken on democratic methods of rule, but its heads of state are the French President and the Bishop of Urgel in Spain. It has adopted the Euro, but is not a fully fledged member of the EU, the mainstay of the economy is tourism.
Andorra is currently going through a building boom with most of the buildings in Andorra not over 25 years old (as only 30 years ago it was a relatively poor country by European standards). This happened by taking advantage of the money injected into it by tourists of which it receives 12million a year. Most of the small communities along the main trunk roads are having ...
