Qantas has little competition in Australia (only Ansett, and their prices are the same) but while this can mean high prices, the service is always superb. You don’t have to pay over the odds though.
Take this tip. If you are going to be in Australia and want to make more than 3 internal flights, join the YHA (about £5) before you go then go to any Qantas office in Australia with your non Australian passport, your return international ticket and your YHA card and ask for the MBAKPAK fare. This will give you the cheapest most flexible tickets in Australia and you can add sectors to it. You must ask specifically for it though as many of the agents have never heard of it. It is cheaper than any ticket you will be offered in the UK (boomerang pass etc.)
Flights between the main centers are very frequent and there is normally no problem getting a seat, but if you plan on flying to Derby or Broome in WA it may be cheaper and easier to buy a ticket back to the UK!
