My experiences with this airline started in November 2004, when I managed to book a round trip to BKK for £380 including tax from Manchester.
I had heard great things about the airline, which had already been awarded 5* status by Skytrax, the Airline quality passenger forum.
When we boarded our flight, there was already someone sitting in our seats, but the Purser quickly came to our rescue and we were shown to Business Class for the 1st leg to Doha. Staff were wonderful throughout, and so keen to impress, I couldn't help but wonder how long they will be able to keep this up for. I hope they can maintain the high standards they have now.
I was so impressed that I have now paid to go Business Class ever since..... Qatar are a fraction of the cost of Thai or B.A. and I am pleased to have found them as I make the trip to BKK at least three times per year.
In business you get a six course meal on each leg of the journey.... so much food you can't eat on the 2nd leg....
Seats are wonderfully designed to give the feeling of space and electronically adjust to almost a flatbed position, though you are lying at a slight angle.
In flight entertainment is the latest Audio Video on Demand System, and this is through all classes on board. A huge selection it's often tempting not to sleep.
If you join the frequent flyers club, once you obtain just burgundy, (after 1st round trip in Economy) you are entitled to 15 KG extra luggage, this means a whopping 45 KG in Business. (or 35 Kg in Economy) Even I would be hard pressed to exceed this! By the end of your 1st round trip to BKK you will get to Silver Status if flown Business class and the allowance is 25KG extra. And if you have friends/family its easy to join them to your card and collect the miles. Qatar allow up to 9 family members - this is a truly generous scheme! The only downside of the club is that there is no on-line balance check yet, and mail from Qatar to the UK takes about 6 weeks on average. However they are very prompt at answering emails. Upgrades and free flights are easy to arrange via the web-site and emails.
The only gripes I have are to do with product consistency. Not all of the aircraft have been fitted out with the new seats in Business and on a flight from Doha to BKK last December 2004, I was very disappointed that the seats were very small and not much better than in Economy. There was individual TV on each seat but no AVOD system. Apparently there are just two aircraft not upgraded at this time, so it's bad luck indeed if you get one of these.
Also the Airport at Doha is clearly not designed for the volume of passengers it now finds transiting through. If you are in Economy, toilets are disgusting and the Café is a rip off. Check your transit time, if more than two hours, think carefully! Business Class avoids the stress of this, but even the Business Class lounge can get cramped at times.
However to sum up: A wonderful airline both in Economy and Business class, excellent value for money. Also they have been very punctual in my experience so far. Fantastic food, entertainment and courteous staff. New aircraft beautifully fitted out, book through the Airline Network. Com or call reservations direct - there is not much difference in price.
