I travelled from Heathrow to Bangkok via Doha with Qatar Airways in January '07 - Economy class
Having never flown alone before and after reading negative reviews about Qatar Airlines I thought this was to be a harrowing experience, however, this was not the case.
Qatar Airways staff were brilliant from start to finish, friendly, polite and nothing was too much trouble for them (even when the passenger next to me kept accidentally pressing the assistance button).
The food was lovely, especially the curry dishes, and plenty of it. A full range of hot and cold drinks including wine and beer were available.
I found that the onflight entertainment system was enough to keep me amused for hours - TV, films, lots of top music albums and games to play including backgammon.
There was ample leg-room and it was also very easy to sleep as the ambience was so relaxed.
Visiting the toilet on an aircraft is usually (in my experience) dreadful, so I was delighted when I found it was spotless and it remained that way throughout the flight, being cleaned and disinfected regularly.
Doha airport is not the most inspiring place in the world but everything went smoothly with no delays and staff were very helpful. The only negative is the 'Smoking Room' at Doha - very cramped and stuffy - in fact it might make one consider packing in smoking!
For a good economy flight I would recommend Qatar Airways highly, I certainly had a much better experience than my boyfriend who travelled with BA, and who's flight was very expensive.
This was an Airmiles package so I cannot quote a price, but having looked at comparison sites Quatar Airways (at this time) seem to be amongst the most economical.

Always particularly happy to see airline reviews on Ciao (my current pet subject) and very interested in your observations of Qater. Views do certainly vary widely and I have a conspiricy theory that different Middle East carriers employees might on occasion not be beneath writing the odd milicious review on certain sites (especially the Indian one modeled on Ciao called Mouthshut). However, your review is honest, from the heart and tells it how it is (or to be correct was). Anyway, enough waffle from my, a very good start and welcome to Ciao. Hope to read about your destination sometime soon.

A very good review. I've heard mixed reports about Qatar but your experience certainly seems a positive one.
