We stayed in Quality Inn, Charlotte during October 2007. The chain is well known for it's luxury and good srvice, so we were looking forward to a quiet week of relaxation after a month of busy traveling. When we got a taxi from the train station to the hotel, we suddenly realised how far from the city centre this hotel was, despite advertising that it was central and had easy access to the centre of Charlotte. It cost a $20+ taxi ride to reach the hotel, which was situated in a small business park on the outskirts of the city centre. (The only saving grace we found was a delightful Chili's restaurant that served delicious cheap food and had friendly waiting staff.)
The lobby was classy, with inviting leather sofas, a log fire and 50" TV. The staff were friendly and smiling, so we thought it was getting better. We entered our room and were very impressed. For the price of a basic double room, we were given a kingsize room with adjoining kitchen and sofa room- very nice! Whilst relaxing on the sofa however, my husband received half a dozen bites on his legs, presumably from the sofa. When we complained the next day, we learned that the hotel accepts pets in the room and that he probably had flea bites. We were promptly moved to a room down the hall and settled in for another night. The same room size was given to us at the same price. That night, we ordered room service after a busy day of sightseeing. We left the plates on the table and within minutes the leftovers were crawling with ants! A caretaker put down product and said he would check on us the next day. By the next day, the ants were crawling through our clothes, in our laptop, even in our bedding. Another complaint to the front desk saw another room change where, finally, we had no more problems.
A plentiful breakfast was seved every morning in the lobby; free wifi was available throughout the hotel; and the pool was decent. Also, despite the problems, the staff were prompt in dealing with our complaints and more than apologetic. This appeased us slightly.
I would only recommend staying here if you have a car as it is far out of the centre. If you don't have a car, to avoid the taxi costs, catch the bus on South Boulevard which is only a mile away. It costs $1.50 for a day pass.
