Mont St. Michel is on the north coast of France, near the border of Brittany and Normandy, and home to centuries of tradition.
In the early eighth century, the Archangel Michael appeared to Bishop Aubert of Avranges, who started an oratory. In 966, a Benedictine monastery was established. In 1020, Richard II began the Abbey Church, and supported Abbot Hildebert's construction efforts. Over time, the spiritual foundations of the abbey waned, and in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries it was used as a prison. In 1874, the French government assumed responsibility for the abbey's upkeep and restoration.

...Well, strictly speaking I was born 20 miles from Belfast, but for three of the last four years the city has been my home.
Having spent time abroad in a larger metropolis, I now appreciate the way of life in Belfast more, but I can see its limitations more clearly too.
While the city does have a welcome sense of closeness - it doesn't take long to start seeing familiar faces as you walk around, and it's good to feel like you can go into a bar and know at least one person - it has to be said that that relative lack of ethnic diversity (apart from the large Chinese community) does lead to a slightly 'closed' mindset amongst some people here. Belfast is, however, the most open-minded city I know in the North.
As a native, I have actually been noticing more and more tourists walking around the city centre and quasi-bohemian Botanic Avenue...
