Crushed by the Wheels of Industry

Advantages: Appeals to my bizarre taste, fascinating history
Disadvantages: A depressed area, few "activities"

In eastern Europe many people sit in the dark. They do in the reception of the Slaski hotel in Katowice; and in the information office at the city's railway station; and I can only assume that the barely dim lighting in the Taj Mahal, Katowice's take on an Indian restaurant, is to disguise the fact that the pickle tray consists of thousand island dressing and tomato ketchup to which a meagre sprinkling of curry powder has been added. I do not know why they sit in the dark - maybe they can't find a bulb stronger than 5 watts, maybe they just like it - just take it from me that they do. It contributes to the surreal ambience to a Saturday night in the south of Poland which, when combined with a sudden downpour, makes this part of the world even more attractive to me. I am a confirmed eastern Europhile and relish some of the quirkier ...

Review of Katowice - Poland

"Doing a George" at the Prestige.

Advantages: Clean, comfortable and cheap
Disadvantages: None

Ok, it's a little off the beaten track. (And if you're interested in what a "beaten track" looks like, check out the photo of the main road into Bangem at the time of our visit.) True, it's not a tourist area. But if you should ever find yourself in the town of Bangem in the Kupe Muanenguba division of Cameroon, then the chances are that you'll stay at the Prestige Hotel. For the princely sum of 10,000 CF (Cameroon Francs), equivalent to approximately £10 a night, you can stay here in the area's top rated hotel - we manage to get a bargain price of £8 as we are a group (five of us) and have someone local negotiating for us. The hotel is situated on the outskirts of town, and is fully equipped with both electricity and running water. True, the electricity is rather subject to availability, as the area is prone to power cuts ...

Review of Hotel Prestige, Bangem, S.W. Cameroon

Hotel Prestige, Bangem, S.W. Cameroon offers good value for money

Advantages: The rooms and bar area are very relaxing. The food is just delicious
Disadvantages: The standard rooms do not have television sets in them

I have stayed in Hotel Prestige on a number of occasions. In my opinion, it offers good value for money and provides a good environment to relax and catch a good night sleep, especially if you have spent the day enjoying the Muanengouba twin lake rich scenery. It is worth noting that the Muanengouba twin lakes offer one of the best touristic attractions in Cameroon. The bar area of the hotel is quite cossy and offers a variety of locally brewed lager beer, some of which are international brands. If time is not a scarce resource for you, then place an order for any of the local dishes. Meat, vegetables and the spices are all fresh, and you could be in for a memorable experience.
