Smoked meat for the Montreal masses
Advantages: Superb smoked meat, genuine Montreal experience Disadvantages: Not for vegetarians!
...pleasure of reviewing the legendary Schwartz's Deli. Lying to the east of the centre of the city, this place is something of a Montreal institution, and is mentioned in every guidebook I have ever read as THE place to go for smoked meat. I always make a point of going there when in Montreal.

Schwartz's was founded in 1928 by Reuben Schwartz, a Jewish immigrant from Romania. Its location hasn't changed in all that time. They prepare their smoked meat the old fashioned way, with a secret blend of herbs and spices, marinated for 10 days. They claim that their competitors add chemicals to the meat, but they add no preservatives. On their web site they list famous patrons, including Celine Dion, Halle Berry, Angelina ...

Don't be chicken, c'est magnifique!
Advantages: Decent price, good service, ubiquitous around Montreal Disadvantages: Vegetarian options not that clear
...was a delivery car for St-Hubert, a popular chicken restaurant and take away establishment. I was staying with Monsieur Montreal and his flatmate (or roommate as they call them there - which still sounds a bit kinky to me) seemed to always have this stuff delivered. And it looked good too; lots of chicken in sauces with some nice looking fries. Well of course I had to try it! And since then it has become a right of passage to have St-Hubert every ... ...though was going to be slightly different as it would be Ms Larsbaby's first taste.
ST-HUBERT
Established in 1951, St-Hubert has about one hundred branches in Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick. I must admit I thought it was a Quebec only chain, so to discover this is interesting.
