Fine food, great for people-watching

Advantages: Cheap(ish), window seats for people-watching, central, lively, good variety of food
Disadvantages: Fills up quite quickly, so hard to get seats

The Queen's Lane Coffee house is, according to the signs painted on its peachy-coloured walls, the oldest coffee house in Europe. It certainly doesn't look it - the owners have done a good job making it brightly-coloured and vaguely contemporary looking, if neither trendy nor glamorous. The food is reasonably good, pitched somewhere between bistro and greasy spoon, with lots of variety (loads of different sandwiches and cakes, as well as Greek and ...
...service is also quick and reliable, and prices are good for the area. However, if you've a little more time and money you'll get a more relaxed, and slightly fancier, lunch at Cafe Boheme across the road. Queen's Lane is superlative for breakfast - it opens earlier than most students and tourists get up, and has a complete breakfast menu. Go across the road to the Grand Cafe instead

Advantages: people watching, convenient for the bus stop
Disadvantages: poor service, overpriced bog standard food

The Queen\'s Lane Coffee house claims to be the oldest coffee house in Britain, or something along those lines. It\'s a shame then that despite years of operation, this place hasn\'t learnt how to cook or serve with a smile. The menu looks scrumptious but when the food arrived, I was very disappointed. It was more like school canteen food, with a leaf of lettuce which apparently constitutes \"salad\". Everything is overpriced and the few food items ...
...quite know how they managed to make danish pastries taste bad. I suspect they\'re bought en masse from the cash and carry... Service is bad- I had to actually stand up and approach the waitress before she noticed me. I have made the mistake of going to this place a few times and I find that the standards are equally low each time. Don\'t let the claim to fame of being the oldest coffee house con you into going here. On the plus side, it\'s a great ...
