I went on holiday recently with a bunch of lads to celebrate our 21st Birthday....what we did in Amsterdam though for that is a different story xD
However on browsing the internet we originally settled on a hotel which was said to be literally 1 minute walk away from the city centre. However due to some stairs being described as the 'Stairs of Death'
We decided to upgrade to a 2* Hotel instead!
On arrival in Amsterdam, we found a booth at the train station where you typed in the address of your hotel, and it located it for you and printed it along with tram lines and numbers to get,
So we printed and thought with our luggage, oh that doesn't look far, we'll walk there. And truth be told, it was only what 20 minutes walk away from the centre. Maybe a bit more depending on your walking pace. But with the Luggage it took a little while longer!
On arrival, we checked in, and payed in cash and had to provide them with our passport number (So you get to keep it unlike some hotels where they try to keep it) and various other details e.e.g name D.o.B. etc and also advised that the front door was locked after 11pm unless you had your hotel card key to unlock it. (Bit of a problem when you have4 lads wondering around Amsterdam and only 2 keys xD )
Anyway we then proceeded to check the rooms out (we had booked a triple and a double)
The Double was two single beds pushed together, so we had to seperate those two and find a spare cover. and in the triple it was one single and one double. The Double in this room could be split, however there was no additional covers to be found?!
Nevermind, as the triple wasn't really necessary as one of the holiday goers had failed to come with us.
On the basic cleanliness of the room it was 'ok'. Down the side of the beds you could see food crumbs or food chunks around. There were no Towels provided for the shower either. (Although it was a cracking power shower!)
And in addition my friends also mentioned that they found stains on there covers - most likely coffee or something. But if it was my hotel I would want my fresh sheets to be clean & stain free!
Now for location it wasn't that bad - despite my gripe about the 20 minute walk from the centre. You were only 2-3 minutes from one of the main squares for eating. (Sky Sports Cafe is nearby which is handy for food and Sky ^^ )
And with the tram lines being right next to this square also, you can easily hop on and get into the centre sharpish.
All in all, I would go again if I was travelling with a similar budget, although this time I'll remember my towel!
Enjoy!
