== History ==
King Qutubuddin Aibak of Slave dynasty laid the foundation of the Qutab Minar in 1199, adjoining the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque, to proclaim the victory of Islam, after the defeat of the last Hindu kingdom in Delhi. It was the Afghan, Muhammad of Ghur who ousted the last Hindu king Prithviraj Chauhan in AD 1192, but he returned to his country leaving Qutbuddin Aibak as his viceroy. In 1206, on his masters death, Aibak crowned himself as the Sultan of Delhi.
The word Qutab Minar :
Qutab means Axis Minar means Minaret
So, you may call it as Axis Minaret. Doesn't sound good. Let it be in its original form :)
The tower which was built in three stages has 5 stories with projected balconies on each.
Qutab-ud-Din completed the first one . Second, third and the fourth were completed by his son-in -law, ''Illtutmish''' in 1230. It was struck by lightening due to which the Top Storey fell down and thus two stories were built in its replacement , the fourth and the fifth in 1370 AD by '''Feroz Shah Tughlaq''' (AD 1351-88).
It is the HIGHEST stone tower in India with a height of 239ft . It has a base diameter of 14-15 meters and 2-3 meters at the top.
The first three storeys are made of red sandstone and are heavily indented with different styles of fluting, alternately round and angular on the bottom floor, round on the second and angular on the third. The fourth and fifth floors are made of marble and sandstone.
Numerous '''inscriptions''' in '''Arabic''' and '''Nagari''' characters are seen as wide encircling bands in the plain fluted masonry of the Minar. This inscriptions reveal the history of Qutub, from its commencement in AD1199 to its repairs in between.
Being so old , the tower still stands straight. Some its floors are being closed by authorities due to some sad accidents which ahppened there. But still you can move uo till 3 rd floor an denjoy this precious monument.

There is a pillar known as Ashoka's Lath adjacent to this lovely monument. The top of this has four faces which are actually part of Indian Currency. The interesting thing which i want to tell you is that you if you stand with your back resting on this pillar, and if you are able to join your hand backward, than whatever wish you have in your mind will get fullfilled...I was not able to join my hands...May be you could !!!!
Advantages: Beautiful, historical Disadvantages: Touts and people harassing you to buy things
The QutabMinar is the largest tower in Delhi at 239ft. It was built by muslims at the centre of a holy spot in the city and stands for victory. It is an awe inspiring sight in the middle of a bustling , dusty city. The beautifully carved and sculpted tower stands in grassy lawns and surrounded by trees. There are also however, the ruins of many other historical sights at the site. This includes the incredible 2000 year old iron pillar the Alai Minar, and many other muslim temples and huge arches. This is a beautiful site and shows you a bit of the historical Indo-Islamic architecture of India. Take some time to observe the intricate patterns carved into each arch. Also take some water so you dont have to buy it from the dodgy sellers outside! ...
New Delhi is India?s capital city is large, bustling, noisy, over crowded and dirty to some people. However scratch below the surface and there is a city waiting to be explored. It may not be on the average tourist?s itinerary but there is plenty to see and do....
There is the Red Fort in Old Delhi which is still a focal point for the country?s independence celebrations. There is the grandeur of QutabMinar which houses a iron pillar. If you stand with your back to it and can encircle the column with your hands your wish will be granted. There are the Lodhi Gardens where the natives of Delhi relax amongst the massive ruins. There is the spectacular Humayan?s tomb and not forgetting the Lotus Temple also known as the Bi?hai Temple.
On top of all this there is the shopping in Central Delhi at Connaught Place. Around Connaught ...
