I have had the misfortune of staying at the Edwardian Kenilworth a number of times now and I must say it would not my fisrt choice for the future.
Location
For me, the location was pretty good as it's central and not too far from tube stations (Tottenham Court Road a few minutes walk). It's very good if you want to go to the British Museum or the theatre as all are nearby. Foodwise, I have found it to be pretty good for coffee shops, restaurants and there are even a few min-mart style shops if you want little bits and pieces. I found it quite quiet at night which could be a little off putting, but I have seen no bother so felt safe enough wandering around late from my restaurant.
Lobby area
The
lobby is pretty de rigeur - slick leather sofas and odd artwork and lots of lighting. I've always found check-in and check out to be very quick, polite and I have been offered wake up calls and newspapers. I have never had an offer to help with my bags. The lifts are not terribly good - very small and slow and with only two serving the hotel it gets pretty bogged down in the morning. Take the stairs if you are feeling hearty enough but you will need your key to get past the first floor.
Room
I have never in my life seen such small hotel rooms. I have stayed there on a number of occasions and only when given a "deluxe" single did I have enough room to turn around in. Even then I would not consider it worthy of the name deluxe at all. All rooms have a TV, desk, wardrobe, iron and ironing board (although not neccesarily enough space to use one), en-suite bathroom and tea/coffee. The beds are comfortable and the linin is to a high standard. I've had problems with my TV in every room, either dicky remote, flickering screen or wobbly screen. However, you don't go to London to watch TV in your room. I have usually found the rooms to be either too warm or too cool, and have yet to find a mechanism to contol it other than to open/close the bathroom door which has heated floors. The tea and coffee making facilities are what I would consider of average standard - tea and coffee sachets but no non-caffine alternative and no biscuits. I have always had some sort of window, although the views of pipes and kitchen areas weren't eactly inspiring.
Bathroom
The bathrooms on a whole are fitted out with pretty nice fixtures and fittings but are excruciatingly small. On one occasion my shower was so that I had to open the shower door and poke my head out to shampoo my hair. However, there are good large mirrors, plenty of loo paper, nice big towels, heated radiator (watch your head getting up from the loo if you are tall though!) and some handwash and shampoo.
Fitness Room
I haven't personally been there, but a colleague did and suggested that it was a bit over ambitious to call it a fitness room. Running machine and some weights.
Restaurant
I must say that I have not eaten at the restaurant other than for breakfast. The menu isn't terribly inspiring - usual bistro type stuff - and prices itself out of the local area. When you are surounded by decent mid-priced restaurants on your doorstep the thought of paying £7 for soup seems a little crazy to me!
I have eaten breakfast at the hotel a number of times. This is the usual serve yourself style, with fresh fruit, cereals, pastries and hot cooked items available. The cooked breakfast items are of a fairly high standard and there is plenty for a vegetarian. Tea/coffee and toast are brought to you on request, although on occasion I've had to ask more than once for toast.
Value for money
On the occasions I have stayed here, my company has paid at waht I believe to be a discounted rate of £115 for a single room with breakfast. I'm not sure if this is much cheaper than the online or walk-in price but I would not consider this to be good value at all.
Overall
This sort of room might be suitable if like me you just need somewhere to sleep after a busy day in the capital. It has a good location and has lots to do nearby so you won't need to spend much time in the room, which is just as well really. However, the rooms are very small and although well turned out make you feel like you are staying in a very well dressed cupboard. I'm certainly inclined to try some of the other hotels in the immediate area.
