I have stayed at this hotel twice in 2005 on each occasion staying just one night before catching flights home to Jersey
Location ----------
The hotel is the only hotel linked directly to Manchester Airport. It is reached via the covered Sky Link which links each of the airports three terminals. From the furthest terminal (three) it is about a five to ten minute walk depending on how fast you are - or how late you are for the plane!
Manchester City centre is only 12 miles away and in a car this would take about 20 minutes. Alternatively you could catch a coach or train from the airports station which is also located within the Sky Link network.
The hotel does have on site parking and some of the deals available include 15 days parking in the price.
Arrival --------
The reception area bright and airy and the main plus was not having to catch a shuttle bus which is the case with all other hotels in the area. Rooms are available from 2pm however they will do their best to let you have your room earlier should you arrive before then. Check in is quick and efficient and the staff not the most friendly and chatty.
Accommodation --------------------
The hotel offers 360 en-suite rooms and suites with all the usual facilities. Views from the
hotel rooms are either of the Manchester skyline or, for my mind the best, a view of the airport. This allows you to sit comfortably in your room and watch the comings and goings of this busy airport.
Despite it very close proximity to the airport you can hear nothing from outside, even when the largest of jets is passing or taking off.
There are a range of rooms to chose from and they come in one of four styles - Maritime, Scandinavian, Oriental and Italian:
Standard rooms: these are the cheapest and are designed for comfort.
Business Class rooms: these are located on the top (ninth) floor of the hotel and have floor to ceiling windows. Extras in these rooms are a daily newspaper, breakfast buffet, bathrobe and slippers.
Business Lady Traveller rooms: specially designed with ladies in mind they have extras including up-to-date women's magazines, fresh fruit bowl, beauty kit and 10% of treatments in the hotels beauty salon. The cost of this upgrade is £35 on top of the basic room rate.
Suites: for that extra special occasion try one of the hotels six luxurious suites. This is the grade of room I booked and stayed in. They come with everything that the business class room has, along with superb views of the airport. In addition there is a chilled bottle of champagne in the room on your arrival. The room consists of a bedroom and a large lounge containing leather sofas, TV and cd players. One of the nicest things about this type of room is the huge bathroom which has under floor heating. Along with a bath and separate shower there are his and hers sinks and exceptional toiletries.
Dining --------
The hotel has two dining options, in addition to room service.
Phileas Fogg Restaurant is located on the same floor as reception and boasts views over the airport. The restaurant has 2 AA rosettes and is open 6.30 - 10.30 for breakfast (7.00 - 11.00 at weekends), noon - 2.00 for lunch and 7.00 - 10.00 for dinner.
Sample dishes include for starters:
Carpaccio of Venison (£7.90) Seared Breast of Wood Pigeon (£10.75) Port Poached Foie Gras (£9.95).
Main courses include:
Honey Fried Breast of Gressingham Duck (£18.75) Steamed Fillet of Halibut (£21.00) Roasted Saddle of Rabbit (£18.75)
I did not dine here as the prices were a little high and also it did feel like you needed to dress for dinner. I am sorry but whilst on holiday I like to relax in jeans so I opted for the second option:
The Runway Brasserie and Bar. This is a much more relaxed option and appeared to be a very popular choice as it can be hard to get a table at busy times. This is open from 11am to 11pm. Food served here is much more down to earth burgers, salads, pizzas and light snacks. Prices are not too excessive when you consider you are dining in an airport hotel.
There is a hotel bar which is open from 11am - 1am but it is pricy.
For those of you on a budget the best advice I can give you is to visit the airports M&Sfood shop which is located in the Sky link as short walk from the hotel entrance. Here you can stock up on snacks and drinks at a fraction of the price.
Many of the dishes served in the two hotel restaurants are also available on room service. I found this to be a pleasant option as it allowed me to relax in the room with good food and watch the world go by! Service is quick and the food excellent where ever you decide to dine.
Spa Services ----------------
The hotel offers an indoor swimming pool which did get very busy first thing in the morning and it isn't very big. In addition there is a sauna, steam room and top of the range cardiovascular equipment. These services are open from 7am - 10pm Monday to Friday, and 8am - 8pm at weekends.
The beauty lounge allows you to indulge in various treatments ranging from Holistic body treatments (from £30), facials (from £37), Massages (from £29). This is available from 9.30am - 6pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Noon - 8pm Tuesday and Thursday and 10am - 5pm at weekends.
I did not have enough time to fit in a beauty treatment but the area looked very nice and the staff certainly appeared to be very professional.
The cost ----------
When considering the price do bear in mind you are paying for the convenience of the location and, to my mind, first class service and wonderful rooms.
Prices are per night and vat is included.
Standard guest room: £145 + 15 days parking: £169 + 7 days parking: £165
Family guest room: £189 + 15 days parking: £225
Business Class room: £180 Suite £265
October 2005 need to add a postscript - just spent another night here and service was terrible - I am about to write to the manager and will let you all know how it goes. If I do not get a satisfactory reply I will fill you in on all the gory details. Sue
