Rafael Larco Herrera Museum (Museo Rafael Larco Herrera), Lima

Advantages: weather, people, cheap (once you're there)
Disadvantages: usual of any big city

..., panpipes etc. If you go to a more local market then you can also pick up cheap (fake) dvds and cds. I think the best thing to do when going to Lima is to contact the tourist information and find out what events are happening while you are there. During my visit I saw a horse show that was attended by the current Peruvian president (who was booed by the locals!). Another of my favourite things was the Museo de Oro, the Gold museum; this had a massive collection of Inca gold and other items of Latin American historical importance. It was a very thorough collection and I would strongly recommend a visit. On a couple of occasions we visited a beach just south of Lima, we went by car and this seems to be the most accessible way. Advantages: Charming and unique hotel with wonderful Gautemalan artifacts and ambiance (a home away from home) run by delightful people.

...The Pasado Belen Museo Inn was the nicest hotel that I stayed in during my Central America tour. The hotel is owned and run by a wonderful married couple Francesca and René. Francesca, Rafael and the rest of the staff there, made me feel welcome from the moment that I arrived. The security there is excellent, and I had the feeling that I was staying in somebody's beautiful home, as opposed to the impersonal feeling that I have had in many other hotels. The Posada Belen is filled with so many Guatemalan artifacts and antiques, that it also resembles a museum. There is also a very nice garden there, and all the rooms are decorated in authentic Guatemalan motifs. The staff at the Posada Belen prepare excellent home-cooked meals, and they are very flexible about meal times. I felt as though I had the quintessential Guatemalan... Read review

...Lima is the point of entry to Peru for most visitors. Why should you put aside some days to get to know Lima? It encapsules hitorical buildings, archeological sites, museums, bars, shopping centres, night clubs, all for any taste possible. This city was the capital of the spanish viceroy in South America, so expect to see a huge amount of colonial buildings from the 16th century in the recently restored city centre. The financial district of Miraflores has vast amounts of shopping centres, artesanal shops, bars, restaurants and night clubs. The city has precolonial museums such as El Museo de Oro, and colonial ones such as El Museo de Arte. The night life gets going in the district of Barranco where you can spend a romantic evening at trova cantines or dance till dawn at one of the raves. What strikes most visitors... Read review
