... So, here we have my top 10 Reasons for hating Railtrack. The more observant among you will notice that some of these items are not really the fault of Railtrack, but hey - why not kick the dog when it's down? 1. THE GHOST STATION Why is it that whenever I am on a train, the train ... Read review

Advantages: I'm trying to think of one
Disadvantages: How long have you got?

...station. Or perhaps it's because Railtrack are so bloody disorganised that the signal man doesn't know his ass from his elbow, and the arrival of trains in the station is a relatively random exercise. You choose.

2. THE GOODS TRAIN

...bit of humility. Not from Railtrack - you can bet your bottom dollar that whatever shit hits the fan it's someone else's fault - normally God. Over the years we've been blessed with the wrong leaves, the wrong rain, the wrong snow and the wrong heat to name but a few. The fact of the matter is Railtrack simply haven't got the guts to admit they got something wrong. This seems to have become something of a national joke now, but personally I just ... more

...an interviewing some guy representing Railtrack and the Train Operators. The Railtrack guy was raving on about the unprecedented numbers of customers that had been returning back to the railways over the last 5-6 years, I suppose they’ve got to put the positive outlook first. But I can vouch for some of that claim as I’ve unfortunately had to use the train a couple or three times during peak hours to commute in and out of London. On those occasions ...
...seat! Anyhow, the Railtrack guy went on to say since the Hatfield incident and the recent rail disruption, customer numbers have been falling dramatically and they don’t believe that they will get them back for 4 to 5 years, if ever! By this stage I was getting annoyed and actually shouting at my telly! However what really incensed me was that Railtrack and the Train Operators have commissioned a survey to glean the views of their customers and the ...

Railtrack care more about shareholders

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: under funded

Railtrack pays out dividends to it's shareholders . The yield that they are paying currently works out at around 8% . It is ridiculous - these payments are being maintained instead of the track ! Not quite fair but near enough . The point is as a PLC the company has to increase shareholder value .Otherwise few people would want to invest in them so their overall value would diminish To do this they have to make cost savings hence the recent problems ...
...so called" fat cats" Railtrack own the British railways infrastructure - ie the track the stations , the essential things in other words. They have starved the network of money and they are now reaping what they sow. We will never have the number of high speed lines that say the French have because the geography of out tiny , over populated island simply won't tolerate it . But the pathetic truth is railtrack have failed in their job. Personaly ...

Prohibitive? I don't think so.

Advantages: Cost
Disadvantages: Can't be late!

Today I have had occasion to find out the cost of a return ticket from Newton Abbot in Devon to Bristol Temple Meads. Why? You ask! Boyfriend problems. A crisis apparently! Anyway I looked at the map of Bristol and my eyes clung sadly to it's hideous gyratory system and I thought...I'll get the train. Terrified that it would be exorbitant I rang the enquiries number and I was told that it would cost a marvellous £21.10, roughly £10.00 and hundreds ...

Another Crash

Advantages: no comment
Disadvantages: no comment

In the light of the train crash 17th October 2000, in Hatfield, wouldn't it be time to say DO SOMETHING! Tracks need repair, trains are getting old, and we are told that the crash was caused by either broken track, a broken wheel or a broken axel. Surely now something should be done to improve our lines and trains. A great deal of money was given to the railways to sort out problems such as these, yet we see another crash, not as bad as some in ...
...not acceptable. The emergency services did a fantastic job as always, yet the uninjured people where not even seen by the train company and offered alternative transport home, as one woman on GMTV this morning (18/10/00) stated, they were just expected to get another train. These people should have at least offered these people the chance to call home at no cost, as many had lost their bags in the crash. A speed limit has been imposed on all trains, ...

...hadn’t yet twigged). From Railtrack to the ex-GPO, they are all at it, and know they can get away with it, because what choice is there? Re-nationalization would not only cost a fortune (one Gordon could probably afford, however), but it would also send a shiver down the greedy, guzzling spines of the business community, which New Labour wouldn’t like at all. Who’d pay for the new curtains, and holidays in those hot places you ...

Railtrack to blame, not Virgin

Advantages: Good customer service
Disadvantages: Poor time keeping, tho not the fault of Virgin

I like the Virgin brand. The record stores, the radio station, even the cola. As awful as the current train service is, I also like the trains. What most people don't realise is that Virgin's poor record, in most cases is not actually the fault of Virgin. I frequently travel with Virgin, and the most of the time, the trains arer within 30 minutes of their scheduled time. On a couple of recent occasions we have been delayed for one reason or another. On these occasions, the staff have been helpful, good at communicating, and most of all continue to be cheery despite the amount of abuse they seem to receive. Yes, it's fustrating when things don't go to plan, but 9 times out of 10, people should be blaming Railtrack, not Virgin. My suspicion at the large percentage of Virgin trains which run late is due to the fact that most ...

Review of Virgin Trains

In general OK

Advantages: Usually fairly on time on the West Coast off-peak
Disadvantages: Fares have gone up recently

Virgin has been getting a battering recently, but in general is has been OK on the West Coast Route from Coventry to London. Recently it's suffered due to Railtrack's repair programme (why didn't they repair the tracks before? But that's another question...) and so it's only running half the trains it should be and taking most of the day to get places (last weekend it took me 2 1/2 hours to get from Coventry to London, 2 hours to get back. It used to take 1h15). I think we ought to leave the big judgement until they bring in their new trains in one or two(?) years time - this is when we'll see if they can run a train service with modern trains, instead of making excuses about the old ones. ...

easy travelling

Advantages: see text
Disadvantages: some delays

. After this, came coffee (the English sort) or tea (better) and lovely chocolates. A convenient hot towel and back to work. Staff are helpful and you may request any complementary drinks as you wish ( vodka, champagne, or just a hot chocolate). The seats could with some dusting and the carpets need replacing but I am seating confortably with a big table (ask for it when booking!: club 4). The train goes smoothly, you do not really feel any movement for the most part of the journey and before you realise you are in Paris, right in the city center. There have been delays a few times and that seems to happen regularly on Sunday nights due to Railtrack works (I will avoid these times especially as the trains are also packed) I do not speak about prices because I never have to pay but I would say you can find some bargains if ...
