Railtrack pays out dividends to it's shareholders . The yield that they are paying currently works out at around 8% . It is ridiculous - these payments are being maintained instead of the track !
Not quite fair but near enough . The point is as a PLC the company has to increase shareholder value .Otherwise few people would want to invest in them so their overall value would diminish To do this they have to make cost savings hence the recent problems we have seen on our rail network .
The company by their own admission is in complete disarray . So what happens ? The departing chief exec Gerald Corbett gets a £1M payoff . The world has gone nuts. Sadly though this is an all too common occurance with the so called" fat cats"
Railtrack own the British railways infrastructure - ie the track the stations , the essential things in other words. They have starved the network of money and they are now reaping what they sow. We will never have the number of high speed lines that say the French have because the geography of out tiny , over populated island simply won't tolerate it . But the pathetic truth is railtrack have failed in their job. Personaly I'm all for re-nationalising the network . Dissolve Railtrack and start again.
It is wrong in my view to have a company floated on the stockmarket running the track and infrastructure of our railway . There is too much of a conflict of interest between profit and maintainence . The way Railtrack are run should be changed back into ownership by the Government and then with proper investment the quality of the track , signalling and the like may improve .
They did inherit a old underfunded system but in my view have not made matters any better with their maintainence and dividend policy.
The conservative government hardly spent a penny on the old BR and this was always going to be a factor . Also in fairness to railtrack the press and media are being a little unkind . You never hear about it when the trains run on time after all , and not all delays are the fault of railtrack. If a train operating company has problems , with their train then that is not railtrack's fault . Only when the infrastructure fails as at Hadfield and Ladbroke Grove can should they take the whole blame.
Rail travel always has been throughout history and always will be ten times more safer statistically than road transport will ever be .
