NAME: yes, let's get the name thing out of the way. It must now be time that vegetarianism and all other things ecological became mainstream and self-confident enough to lose their counter-culture clinging to the dippy-hippy era. "RAINBOW" is just so "60s". So is there anything specifically "hippy" about this place? Well it is in a cellar… and the lighting is a little subdued, and ... ...LOCATION, ACCESSIBILITY etc: The Rainbow Café is located on (or technically, just off) Kings Parade. The entrance is directly opposite the main gate of Kings College, right in the centre of Cambridge. Despite this, it is easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Advantages: Choice, food, service Disadvantages: A little on the steep side
...and variety of restaurants, the Rainbow Cafe seems to be the only one which caters specially for vegetarians. Not only this, but even vegans and those with allergies are provided for.
Although I've been in Cambridge for nearly two and a half years now, I had until recently thought that the Rainbow Cafe was, as the name implies, a cafe. I was wrong. To get to it, you need to first notice the sign hanging above the entrance to a small alleyway then, ... ...the restaurant. When I got there, I was pleasantly surprised by the lightness and comfortableness of the interior, even though it was underground.
It wasn't immediately obvious what to do, however, once we had reached the bottom of the stairs. We then saw the sign telling us to go down a short corridor, where we were met by one of their extremely friendly waitresses.
