It takes about 30-40 minutes to go up the Sky Rail to Karanda and there is also a scenic railway. Depending on which option you go for you can go to/from using either or a combination and costs vary. I would recommend booking a daytrip as coaches collect and drop you off at your hotel. Be aware that it is often very busy with group bookings and there can be alot of queues at busy times. The skyrail cable car pods seat four comfortably and aren't that big so if you don't like heights don't use the skyrail. There are two stations on the way up and the first requires a stop to change cars. At both stops there are small walks you can take in the canopy to have a better look at the trees and look for the very elusive wildlife. There are alot of signs and information boards that make it interesting. The alternative scenic railway is historically facinating and well worth it as there is an on board commentary. With your ticket you get good guides to what you can see and the history surrounding the skyrail, railway and Karanda .
From the skyrail you get a fantastic view over the rainforest and usually see wild cockatoos flying about. Kuranda used to be a huge hippy market with great places to eat and great shopping but it is very commercial these days but you will still find lots to see and do. I reccommend a trip or walk on or by the river as theres alot of wildlife. I also recommend browsing around some of the art galleries as theres some excellent buys.
