Advantages: many different foods Disadvantages: smells, poverty, dirty, culture shock
...There are not many places on earth that you could say gave you an unpleasant shock. I visited Bangkok in December of 2001 for 3 days, and after that I could positively say that I had an unpleasant shock. We were staying right in the middle of the city centre, in a 4 star hotel, no complaints there, it was great, but as soon as you steped outside of the hotel, you could see the hard lives these people had.

...Backpackers if you've got the cash to spend try prebooking one night at one of the nicer BangkokHotels. Its a real bargain. Always a good idea after a long flight to spend a little extra cash and in Bangkok you get real value for money. The same places would be hundreds in London or New York. Recommended is the Marriot Royal Garden Riverside which can be booked at special rates if you join up at marriotrewards.com.
After that most first time travellers head to Banglamphu to the Khao San Road. Watch out its full of rip offs and seriously horrible rooms. For a decent nights sleep Soi Rambutri behind the temple is quieter and My House is clean.
Also I've met many people who rave about the Shanti Lodge near the National Library.
Don't let an unmetered taxi driver take you anywhere to stay, you'll probably get robbed!...

I choose this hotel as a result of a special offer on 'asiarooms'. On arrival we were promptly shown to our room by a very helpful member of staff.
The Deluxe room was a lot bigger tahn other hotels I have stayed in. However, it did seem a little... more
