SUMMIT? JUST THE OPPOSITE!

Advantages: continental breakfast; outdoors swimming pool
Disadvantages: THE ENTIRE HOTEL BADLY NEEDS RESTORATION, REFURBISHING & SANITATION!

I stayed at Summit from 14th to 16th May 2008. Location is TRAGIC. It is not in Rome, franklly speaking, it is hardly in Rome. Rather in some village. It takes 3 (THREE) hours to walk from Colosseum (and other places of interest) to Summit. Going by bus will hardly help as the bus runs once per hour. The place itself is easily recognizable by a smell of horseshit. There are marks of water on the walls and ceilings in all parts of the hotel. And it smells some past flood. The only advantage could be the swimming pool - but I saw no one there. The breakfast is served only from 7 am - even if we had to leave to Rome for the forum and conference (which, thank God, was not held at "Summit") at 7:45 already. The food is good but standard (the sausage, omelette, boiled eggs, cheese, ham, juice, coffee, pastries). The reception demands 100 EUR ...

Review of Summit Roma Hotel, Rome

There's Summit about it

Advantages: Larger Memory, Digital Compass, Altimeter
Disadvantages: Battery life.

I won't go into the details of how GPS works as there are a number of reviews round these parts that do a good job of explaining it. What i will do is explain why, after two years, I decided to upgrade my trusty old (bright yellow) garmin eTrex to a shiny new (silver) eTrex Summit. Garmin are well known for their GPSofferings, with the eTrex range being aimed squarely at people who enjoy the outdoors. The old yellow eTrex (review in the appropriate category) was, and indeed still is, at the bottom of the range. This is not to say it's a bad product, but after a few years of use, I started to realise it's limitations. Not wanting to cover too much old ground (and without trying to force too many more reads of an old review), the eTrex is a basic GPS device that is capable of storing up to 500 waypoints and a single route (which ...

There's Summit About It!

Advantages: Compact, Rugged, 50 routes, Electronic Compass
Disadvantages: Battery life

I won't delve deeply into the details of how GPS works. That would take ages and you might already know. But in case you don't - suffice to say that there's a bunch of satellites orbiting the earth. Each one sends out a time signal along with it's unique identifier. GPS devices know about each of the satellites and where they are in relation to each other so, by working out the time difference between each of the signals sent by each satellite, the GPS receiver can work out where on earth it is (literally!). With that out of the way I will try and explain why, after two years of owning a "bog-standard" GPS receiver, I decided to upgrade my trusty old (bright yellow) Garmin eTrex to a shiny new (silver) eTrex Summit. Garmin are well known for their GPS offerings. In recent years they've turned it into a massive business. The e ...
