Having already spent a very nice short break at the Ramada Jarvis Gourock Hotel for my birthday a couple of years ago we decided to book the Christmas Party Night for the 16th November. I know it’s a bit early to be celebrating Christmas but for us it was just an excuse to get away for the weekend.
The Ramada Jarvis Gourock is situated on the Firth of Clyde, within easy reach of Glasgow Airport and the city centre. It is also handy for beauty spots like Dunoon and Greenock.
The Christmas Party Night package includes, for £40 per head, an overnight stay with Christmas dinner and disco (finishing at 2am) and breakfast the next morning, as well as full use of the hotel facilities. Check in is at 4pm leaving plenty of time for a swim before dinner, which is served, from 6.30 until 9pm.
Our room was very spacious and tastefully decorated in cream and tartan fabrics with an enormous double bed. There was a bathroom and cloakroom area with tea and coffee making facilities, a steam press and a television. We were lucky enough to have a sea view, and the view down the Clyde is truly spectacular. The only complaint I would make is that the cost of watching a video was, I felt, excessive at £7.00 per viewing.
We took full advantage of the hotel facilities prior to dinner by going for a swim, Jacuzzi and sauna. There is also a steam room, gymnasium and tenniscourts. The swimming pool is a reasonable size and is heated to roughly 22 degrees. In fact, it’s hard to get out once you’re in. Towels are supplied so there’s no need to bring any with you.
For the party night dinner it is necessary to inform reception staff of when you intend to arrive for dinner. As I mentioned before, it is served anytime between 6.30 and 9.00pm so there’s no need to rush. The dinner is buffet for the main course but the starters and desserts are served by the waiting staff. For the price of the party night I thought the food was really quite nice and there was a good selection available. The dessert was particularly nice – Christmas pudding with a caramel sauce and fresh cream. The drinks aren’t that much dearer than in your average pub. Party poppers and Christmas crackers were supplied at every table. The disco started about 9.30 and the DJ played a selection of hits from the 60s through to the up to the minute stuff.
On checking in the reception staff ask you what newspaper you would like delivered to your room in the morning. We asked for the Sunday Herald which, luckily,is free. Breakfast is served from 7am – 10 am. The variety of food in the buffet is amazing – full fried breakfast, fruit, cereal, juice and croissants. There is something to please everybody. Tea and coffee is served by the waiting staff.
Once again we took advantage of the facilities and went for another swim before checking out at 12 midday.
I would thoroughly recommend the Jarvis Christmas Party Night as I believe it represents good value for money, and the location of the Gourock Jarvis is stunning. The hotel staff are also very pleasant and helpful.
I would prefer, however, if it were possible to book the party night on line. Unfortunately you have to complete a form and send it in with your credit card number to pay the deposit which is £10 per head. They send you a reminder for the balance which has to be paid about 2 weeks before you arrive.
