INTRODUCTION
As one of my Christmas presents this year my husband treated us both to a nice weekend away, this is something we do on a regular basis but as he had taken the time to book and arrange everything it made it all the more special.
York is known because of its influence in the Medieval times so visiting the city is certainly something to be talked about, we have often looked at going for a weekend but the hotel prices were so expensive we have always opted for other parts on the country that are that little bit cheaper.
My husband had arranged for us to spend a long weekend in York, This is a place I have not visited for many years so I was really excited and couldn't wait to go as the four star accommodation he had arranged looked fantastic.

THE HOTEL ITS SELF
The Ramada York Fairfield Manor is an old eighteenth century Georgian manor house, which is situated in a massive six acre span of private land which consists of countryside and sits on the River Ouse.
The hotel is sitting in a very old building which has been extended so some of the areas are very modern looking, but it seems to works well as they have all the modern amenities but with an oldie world touch that fits in and does not look out of place.
This four star accommodation offers many things such as a sun patio which is situated to the right of the main entrance, I can see this will appeal in the summer as you are slap bang in the middle of the country side. So a nice beer and sunshine would help as we were visiting in December all we had was ice, wind and rain so this was only used when I wanted me nicotine intake.
Another thing that really appeals is the lounge that had a massive log burning fire, here you could warm up and just sit in one of the massive leather couches while go got you blood circulating after being out in the typical British weather.
This hotel also offers many other things but these will be explained later in my review.
LOCATION
The Ramada York, Fairfield Manor is three and a half miles north-west of York railway station so a short taxi ride could get you to the hotel, but I would advise you have a car as this hotel is somewhat isolated and will cost you a fortune to get anywhere, unless you wanted to walk a few miles to grab a bus into the York city center.
A few miles down the road there is a Park and ride facility at Rawcliff, this allows you to park all day and get a return bus ticket into York itself. This costs a bear 2.50 each which is very good compared to the 10.00 a day parking charges in the York town center.
Overall the hotel is very well situated as it is secluded but Designer Shopping Outlets, Shopping centers, Bowling alley, a Vue cinema and many restaurants such as Frankie and Benny's, buy one get one free pubs are located a few miles away, so this is when a car will come in very handy.
ROOMS
We stayed in a double room which consisted of a double bed, a table and two chairs, a desk and chair, a bed side table, a wardrobe and two other units. So there was plenty of space in the room as it contained all of this stuff but it still had a minimalistic look to it.
The en-suite bathroom had a bath with shower, toilet and hand basin which was inset into a massive unit that spanned the whole bathroom and it was tiled from floor to ceiling which gave it a very clean look.
The only thing wrong with the bathroom was the fact that the plug in the bath didn't work, well technically it did but you could not get the thing out once it had been placed in the plug hole. I broke a nail trying to get it out and still didn't manage it.
The room had a flat screen television and a keyboard for the internet access but this was very expensive at 9.99 a day so we didn't bother with it.
The room was very clean and comfortable which made it very welcoming, the bed was comfortable and I slept really well which is very unusual for me as I hate sleeping in strange surroundings.
Also in the room was a welcome pack so you could see what was available within the York area, this included up to date information, maps and prices which we found to be invaluable to us during our stay.
It is strictly no smoking throughout the hotel so smoking was not permitted in the rooms and this was backed up by there being two separate smoke alarms in the room, so there was not chance of having a shady puff. I even saw myself walking out of the hotel to the sun patio at two in the morning to have a smoke.
RESTURANT / BAR
Kirby's restaurant is situated to the side of the lounge, on first impressions it looks very impressive as the tables are set up perfectly but the menu and prices are ridiculous. You are looking at 25.00 for a main course with isn't bad but the food has to be good and at this place it was awful.
The breakfast is served from 8AM-10AM and costs an additional 15.50 per person, this to is very excessive as it is a help your self buffet that consists of cereals, fresh fruit, fruit juice which was never filled up so we always went without, sausage, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, fried egg and scrambled eggs.
This all sound good but if fact is was awful everything was swimming in grease and made it inedible, so that just left us with the option of tea and toast which was brought to you after you were seated by the staff.
Well I had waited twenty minutes for my tea and toast, everyone else was getting there's so asked the young polish girl who was working if I could have some, she was rude and just sneered and told me to wait. How rude at 15.50 for tea and toast and I couldn't even get that, I was so annoyed as this happened on two out of the three days we ate but there was nothing we could do as my husband had paid for the breakfast when he booked.
Another thing that really got to me was the complete rudeness of the waiting on staff, yes they all look presentable but there attitudes stank and I am one of these that say thank you and appreciate what they do, but this lot were not interested and for me to actually say they were rude than they must have been bad.
To top off the meals on day two the chef came out of the kitchen scratching his man hood than picking up sausages with the same hand and placing them in the serve your self buffet yuck, He then went on to shout and curse at the staff as they were not replacing the greasy food with fresh stuff.
The bar was very pleasant and not really that over priced at 3.20 a pint and 4.80 for a small glass of wine, yes it would be cheaper in a pub but for the surroundings I found it to be very reasonable.
The bar was open for 11AM until 11PM everyday, we only had a couple of drinks in the hotel and then walked about quarter of a mile down the road to a Pub called the Farm house, here I was getting buy one get one free meals which were actually very good and bottles of Jacobs white with for 6.99 a bottle, so there was really no need to eat the junk they serve in the hotel of pay to drink in the bar.
PRICES
As I said this was a cheap deal obtained from the moneysaving expert site, we paid 68.00 a night plus meals 15.50 a day for breakfast.
In total the room was 204.00 for three nights, the breakfast was 93.00 for the two of us for three days and then we had an additional meal at roughly 60.00.
As far as the room was concerned it was very cheap and we were very happy with it, but the meals were a complete rip off and I would never recommend that anyone eats here, no matter what the price is as you will probably keel over within hours, especially if you eat the continental breakfast.

MY OPINION
The one thing that really impressed me was the fact that the hotel would lend you wellies and umbrellas so you could walk around the six acre grounds, this is not something I would usually do but as I am a smoker and the hotel has a strict no smoking policy I would do this on a regular basis. To be honest I am so glad I did this as I got to take in some amazing sights of the Yorkshire countryside.
I came home with a bag full of sea kelp shampoos, conditioners, soaps, bubbles and body creams courtesy of the Ramada Jarvis York, I love all the toiletries you get when you check in and out of the hotel, although I was not keen on the sea kelp my mother in law loved them.
As for the four stars rating this hotel has I would agree for the rooms and the reception staff, but as for the meals and the waiting on staff this should be lower. Surly for a four star hotel they should do exceptional meals especially for the price they are charging to eat this junk, I wouldn't even fed the food to a stray dog it was that bad.
If you ever have the chance to stay here I would recommend it but do not eat, I would stay again but I would go to the pub down the road of travel a few mile to get something good to eat.
Overall we had a very nice weekend and I spend loads of money at the designer clothing outlets and in the sale that were on the York's city center. We also went to Jorvik Viking center and yes it is still as smell as I remember but at 8.50 each it was good to go back.
