The New Yorker is in an excellent midtown location with the subway (lines A, C & E) literally steps outside. Being on the corner of 8th Avenue and 34th Street this meant good access to Macy's, Empire State Building, Madison Square Gardens and the Manhattan Mall. There was another subway station one block along 34th Steet which connected to lots of other subway lines.
The hotel itself is a bit rundown. It is nothing major in my opinion and you can see the grandeur the hotel used to have - for example there are some extremely impressive chandeliers in the lobby area. It is all in an Art Deco style which I love but is of course subjective!
There are renovations underway at this hotel to "restore it to its former glory". The drawings of "how it will look" appear very impressive. No doubt the increase in prices when it's complete will be equally impressive though!
Our room was very small, but with just two of us this wasn't a problem. The bathroom was a bit old and tired but it was kept very clean by the daily maid service. The bedroom likewise was a bit dated in terms of decor but kept very clean. The air conditioning unit was unbelieveably noisy, though not as noisy as the renovations that were taking place outside our bedroom window. The feet of the workmen were level with our window which was a bit disconcerting, especially as the curtains didn't draw very well. We got dressed and undressed in the bathroom for this reason. Our bathroom had no lock which did not trouble us but ohers may not like this.
In fairness, we did not ask to be moved so the hotel may have done something about this situation if we had asked. They had signs up everywhere explaining what they were doing, and why. The renovations were only taking place between 8.30am and 4.30pm so were not a problem for overnight sleep!
We ate in the Tick Tock Diner twice. The food was fine but we did find the staff a bit unfriendly. What we preferred by far was a diner opposite the Tick Tock Diner (coming out of Tick Tock on 34th Street). I think it was called Andrew's Diner - but look for the word "Diner" in pink lights. This place was much cheaper than the Tick Tock and the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful.
For the price I paid, I would rate this as "average", but there were definitely areas for improvement. That said, if you are looking for a well located hotel and you just want the room to sleep in this should be fine for you (while the hotel remains under renovation, anyway!)
Advantages: Location, Price, Staff Disadvantages: Slightly small rooms
We stayed at the New Yorker April 2006. We found the rooms weren\'t huge but enough space for two and extremely good on price.
The staff were all really friendly but not in that overly patronising way that can sometimes happen in the USA.
For us, the added bonus' were the Italian on the bottom left of the hotel and more so, the Tick Tock diner on the right of the hotel. The great thing about the diner was that it was open 24hours, ideal for those ... ...on the wrong subway and got lost in Queens! But that's a whole other story.
The diner had a 'Hurley' lookalike - Lost star. I'm not sure if he knew it, but he was the friendliest chap I have ever met as well. Anyway, we got back to New York next year for our wedding, unfortunately we can't get back into the New Yorker as they are having renovations done. Do try and go at some point though. Its ideally placed for most of the sights and scenery. If ...

Advantages: Centrally located, Fantastic concierge service, Airport Transfer can be arranged Disadvantages: Located in the Garment District Credit Card takes a beating.
...the revolving doors into the Ramada Plaza & Inn - New Yorker Hotel, New York City. We had expected something quite shabby as it was a last minute deal through expedia.co.uk whilst sitting in Manchester Airport waiting for our flight to arrive. (Talk about last minute). The hotel can arrange airport transfers in the form of a limousine service, they cover JFK Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Newark and LGA. The cars range from a comfortable 4 seater limousine ... ...at a price, it ranges from $65.00 to $110.00 (£35.00/40.00 to £60.00/70.00) not too expensive they will display your name on a board, taking the hassle out of waiting for taxi's.
We arrived quite late at night, the Lobby was immaculately clean, staff were well presented and very helpful. We were showed up to our room and left to settle in. The room was quite basic to be honest but was neat, tidy and clean, included was a desk and chair, hair dryer, ...

Advantages: Great location, clean and tidy. Disadvantages: A little dated, but being refurbished.
My wife and I stayed at the New Yorker Hotel between 20th - 25th May 2008. The staff were always very helpful and curtious. The room decor was a little dated, but clean and tidy. The hotel is undergoing a refurbishment, but the work was not noticeable to the guests. The "tick-tock" diner is located in the front entrance of the hotel, which was very good for breakfast, with a great service! The hotel location is great, with the subway just outside ...

New Yorker, New York Review ofRamada Plaza & Inn-New Yorker Hotel, New York Cityby

Advantages: Well placed for Empire State and Madison SG, pleasant hotel Disadvantages: looking a little tired in places
I stayed here in January 2006 for 4 nights. We were a party of 2 adults and 2 children staying in a double room. The beds are slightly less than double so we had 1 child and 1 adult per bed, which obviously only works with young children.
The New Yorker has had a very colourful past, with the some of the very biggest names having stayed there. Ali, stayed there in the early 70's after losing at Madison Square Garden. It has to be said though that ... ...the 70's/80's it is now looking reasonably good.
The decor in the rooms and landings is looking very tired and the bathrooms are quite small, however the rooms are clean and warm with plenty of hot water and good pressure on the shower. Plenty of towels are supplied and we have no complaints. Yes I would stay again.
There is a traditional New York diner downstairs - The Tick Tock Diner which is good but I believe it is relatively expensive. We ...
