Although transit to Rameswharam is rather demanding even from Tuticorin and over the magnificent Pambam bridge I would recommend a trip there to all travellers in Tamil Nadu.
It was wonderful to be in such a friendly temple complex and to be invited, though a non-hindu, to perform the puja in the 22 baths of the Agri Theertham. The cleansing took most of the morning and in the afternoon we walked along the spit of land to the ruined city of Dhanushkodi, this modern disaster site was moving and yet the whole area surrounding it and down to the final Southern-Eastern corner of India is very beautiful and peaceful.
Take a camera and some water as the fishing villages towards Dhanushkodi are as remote as they are picturesque.
