Rebecca

Advantages: A Hitchcock classic.
Disadvantages: A little wooden.

***INTRO*** My DVD video of the Hitchcock's classical adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier's celebrated novel REBECCA came free with the Times, because of this you don't get much more than the film, there is some advise on what to expect from the Times in this section in the future. The film directed by Hitchcock was named the Best Picture in the 1940s by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It was brought to use by ABC Motion Pictures Inc. The film is rated PG parental guidance fit for viewing by persons generally. Some of the scenes may be unsuitable for young children. ***THE STORY*** The story adapted by Philip MacDonald & Michael Hogan includes the cast of: Lawrence Olivier: George Fortescu Maximillian (Maxim de Winter). Joan Fontaine: The second Mis.de Winter. George Sanders: Jack Favell. Whilst on holiday ...

Review of Rebecca (DVD)

Last night I watched Rebecca again

Advantages: excellent story
Disadvantages: acting a bit stiff in places

The film is based on the excellent book by Daphne du Maurier, which was a favourite of mine as a teenager. It was of course directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940 and stars Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine (sister of Olivia de Havilland). For those of you who don't know the story, it begins in Monte Carlo where a shy nameless girl is staying in a hotel with her overbearing celebrity-chasing employer. They meet Maxim de Winter, a handsome widower whose wife Rebecca was drowned in a sailing accident the year before. The pair fall in love and marry, but when the honeymoon is over and they return to Manderley, Mr de Winter's grand estate in England, cracks start to appear. Rebecca's memory seems to have a hold over the house and everybody in it, there are reminders of her everywhere and her old room is kept as a shrine exactly as she ...

Review of Rebecca (DVD)

Rebecca

Advantages: A great read
Disadvantages: You will want to go to Cornwall right away!

The first Daphne du Maurier book I read was Jamaica Inn which, until this day and at least four reads later remains my favourite book ever. Rebecca is also based in beautiful Cornish countryside and really takes the reader back to a time of country mansions, butlers, maids, housekeepers and supressed women! The fact that we never know the new Mrs de Winter's forename is very intriguing, is du Maurier referring to herself? Du Maurier describes Cornwall beautifully, (she should know - she lived there most of her life!) the reader is really taken in by the description of the area and people. I would recommend this book to everyone, it is a book we should all read and enjoy to the fullest extent. My only regret is not reading it earlier! ...
