Reds is located in the financial district of Downtown Toronto on Adelaide St. W. in First Canadian Place. (see below for address) Reds is split into two levels with the ground floor being Reds Cafe & Bar, and Reds Bistro found upstairs. This review only focuses on Reds Bistro as I did not eat at the Cafe & Bar while in Toronto.
Reds Bistro has won many awards, many for their fine selection of wines including the "Wine Spectator's Award of Excelllence" three years in a row. In fact, the dishes on the menu are all inspired by different wine regions and each dish on the menu has a recommended wine choice to accompany it. Never fear though if you don't like the sound of the choice! All the waiters are sommelier-trained and will bring you an alternative that will compliment your dish once he knows what you like normally. Don't worry if you're not a wine expert either! I'm most certainly not, but I do know what I like! Our waiter simply asked me what I usually drink and brought me a wine that, I'm ashamed to say I can't remember what it's called, but was fantastic! My boyfriend loved his wine so much, that he had another glass of it for dessert!
My partner and I recently got engaged in
Toronto :-) and Reds Bistro is where he had booked to take us out for dinner afterwards. It was wonderful! Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were immediately shown to our table upstairs by happy staff (which always makes a difference!) who only left us once our waiter arrived. Our waiter, Al, was very good and even gave us a free glass of champagne each when he found out we had just got engaged! Al stayed and chatted to us for a while and then left us with the menus. We had plenty of time to choose our meal without it being too long and when we made our selections, Al moved onto wine and decided what to bring us. The wine arrived swiftly, and after ensuring we were happy with the choice, Al left us alone to talk and enjoy the wine.
When our meals arrived, we were not disappointed. If you go to the website listed below, you will find the menu, we selected from the Bistro Dinner menu. For myself, I chose the Smoked Quebec Duck Magret. I was very upset when I finished this, the duck was beautifully cut, with only the tiniest sliver of fat at the top, so small you could eat it and it did not ruin the duck. The meat was full of taste and the plum compote brought out the flavours beautifully! My partner chose the ribeye steak and also "oohed" and "aahed" over the taste!
For dessert, my partner chose to have a small glass of wine, while I launched into the frozen coconut souffle. All in, the meal cost us $160CAD. The service from Al was impeccable, we were never rushed, he never hovered around us, yet he managed to make sure everything was enjoyable and chatted with us for a while between courses which made us feel relaxed and very welcome.
The layout of the bistro is elegant. Subdued lighting (without being too dark) helped to add to the atmosphere of luxury and comfort. The tables were all well spaced with plenty of room between them and the chairs themselves were v comfortable, I've never noticed the chairs in a restaurant before!
Overall, an beautiful restaurant with stunning dishes, extremely friendly and competent staff and wonderful food! I would point out, that if you do like to try different wines and consider yourself an expert, this restaurant could be very pricey, but well worth it!!!
