My boyfriend and I were desperate for a holiday, so we started looking on the internet for a last minute deal - we were greeted with a fantastic offer to go to the maldives........
We stayed at Reethi Rah, in the North Male Atoll, it took us about eleven hours to get there with a stop ay Bahrain for two hours. We reached Male Airport and then got a transfer by Dhoni (maldivian name for boat) to our island - the journey by boat was going to take approximately 2 and a half hours, as we left the port we were greeted by about 50 baby dolphins i could feel it was going to be a magical holiday!!!!
When we reached the island it looked completely deserted, we were greeted by the staff and taken into the bar for registration and to get our room keys.
All the bungalows for guests were on one side on the island and the staff quaters were on the other side, there was a path through the middle of the island which was like a tunnel due to the amazing undergrowth protecting the path and growing around the bungalows.
When we arrived we were amazed at the beauty of the accomodation, it had a coconut roof and wooden floors, it had a good size bedroom and bathroom, with a small sand patio at the front and a little basin to wash your feet as you came in and out. There was plenty of wardrobe space and we had our own beach chairs which we could use on the beach or on our patio, each bungalow had there own beach area and most of the time you felt as if you were the only ones on the island!!!!
We had bed and breakfast accomodation and the food was absolutely delicious with a huge varity to choose from as all meals were a buffet, you could also eat as much as you wanted for a fixed fee - i'm vegatarian and i didnt have a problem finding anything to eat all week.
The island provided lots of excursions and we went night fishing, we also went on a sunset cruise, however you go on snorkelling excursions shopping days in Male, so you could do as much or as little as you liked!
The resort had three bar areas: a beach cafe, were you could go during the day in your swim wear, the seating was amazing with swinging big and small chairs and small chairs that were made of wood and string. The second bar was the main bar, here you couldn't wear swim suits and this is where most of the nightly activity took place. The bar staff were very friendly and made you feel very welcome. The third bar was the coffe shop again you couldnt wear swim suits and this was situated on stilts over the sea, with a veiwing gallery in the middle, we went here for lunch and dinner a few times and were often joined by sting ray and a host of other marine life. The staff often fed the fish which encouraged the to stay near by - they were regarded as pets!!!
The island rule is no news and no shoes, and we didn't wear shoes for a whole week!!!!! The weather was absolutely excellent and we did actually go in the wet season and it only rained once for about 15 minutes during the day, however when we were asleep it did rain occasionaly, but obviously we didn't mind that!
The resort was kept in typical maldivian style and i thought that was much nicer than some of the resorts we had seen during our transfer that were all concrete, commercial and "in your face". The resort is actually being refurbished next year, but only to increase the size of the resturant and bar area. We will dfinately be going back, whether its before or after the refurbishment who knows!!! We don't really care we fell in love with the place!!!!
