In Julia London's The Beautiful Stranger a pretty Scottish widow Kerry MacKinnon and ... more
Arthur Christian, a rich and powerful peer of the British realm, are thrown together by fate on a deserted Scottish road. Together they travel cross-country to reach her Highland home and although society would never condone a match between them, they fall in love. Arthur knows that he can never offer the lovely widow a future, but in the days he spends at her manor, he becomes increasingly enchanted by Kerry, her beautiful glen, and the quiet rural life she lives. Kerry is desperate to save her debt-ridden glen home and struggles to find a way to pay the overdue mortgage and outwit the lecherous neighbour determined to foreclose. Too late, Arthur learns the extent of the danger that threatens her. He's determined to rescue her, but before Kerry is truly safe they will have to risk everything, including their very lives. The Beautiful Stranger has an abundance of twists and turns in an intriguing plot, strong secondary characters that include an unscrupulous villain, and a convincing period setting. Combined with a passionate and indestructible connection between two honourable people, the sum total is a novel with all the elements necessary for a thoroughly absorbing historical romance.--Lois Faye Dyer, Amazon.com

If you haven't been to London before, then go to Regent Street. Less chain-store oriented than Oxford Street, its best feature is easily Hamleys, with over 5 floors of toys and games. There is a great ice-cream shop close to the Piccadilly Circus end, as well as Cheers bar, themed on the American TV show, and lots of specialist shops like the Apple store, and Liberty's is just round the corner. However, if you've been to London before, then avoid this street, as it is always packed with people, and Saturdays are a complete nightmare. There are many better places to see, and I much prefer the streets leading off it, like Carnaby, which have more interesting shops, and are a lot less manic.
Advantages: Shopping ... if they are selling what you want to buy, I guess. Disadvantages: Tacky, mainly souvenir places now, the magic is long gone.
That Carnaby Street has a place in history as the fashion spot of the Swinging Sixties is a fact. Here, the Mods got their clothes, Mary Quant became famous, and anyone who was anyone back then shopped here. Back then, Che Guevara smouldered from posters, tee-shirts and flags, a revolutionary who was a hero to many and yet most knew very little about why.
Situated off RegentStreet in London's West End, this little street had a big reputation back then. Easily reached from Oxford Circus tube station, it is accessible for people in wheelchairs as well as the able-bodied. Unfortunately, despite various attempts over the years to rejuvenate the area, it is now looking decidely tacky and a lot of the shops are full of the same tee-shirts and tourist-y stuff as each other. There are a couple of nice little shops down there, one has ...
Advantages: Good choice of stores Disadvantages: Busy
Oxford Street is a must for all shopaholics. Situated in Central London and adjoining RegentStreet it truely is a shoppers dream and an all round great shopping experience.
It is always very busy and full of hustle and bustle. I regularly shop here because I love the ambience of the place. There are a huge range of shops from large department stores (my favourite is Selfridges) to smaller specialist shops and street traders. There is plenty to see and my advice is to take a whole day there, that way you won't miss anything.
Should hunger get the better of you there are numerous eateries from popular fast food restaurants to bars, cafes and more typical English restaurants. You never have too far to go.
Access is by bus or tube, the area is served by the central line either at Oxford Circus or Bond Street. Don't drive there ...
Advantages: Cheesy Music Disadvantages: Crowded with Tourists
Strawberry Moon - just of a little side street on London's busy RegentStreet.
WHY?
I accidently ended up in Strawberry Moon after my other half's work do - after they'd served us all the drink they'd let us drink in at the bar of The Langham Hilton we ventured on for somewhere that would serve us more alcohol. We lost a few on the way - but us hardcore party goers made it somehow to the only club we were able to find along the backstreets of London's RegentStreet.
THE ATMOSPHERE:
After the initial unfriendly entry to the club - the security staff weren't really that chatty - I ventured in to fight my way through the overcrowded top bar to the bottom bar and cloakroom - the moment I entered I knew we were going to need a lot more to drink - several lechy guys tried to pounce immediately only spurred off by the friendly smile ...
