Cool Cupola

Advantages: strikingly modern and full of history, free access
Disadvantages: none

...boring. Not so the Reichstag (pronounced: raychs-tag), the German equivalent, in the course of my life I've seen it in three different varieties, if I were older, I could add a fourth. This is not so surprising, after all the building stands in Berlin, about which the art historian Karl Scheffer said in 1910, "Berlin is condemned forever to become and never to be."

The original Reichstag was completed in 1894, the architect ...
...Federal Republic of Germany, the Reichstag lost its significance, it was restored only provisionally and used for different functions, among others as a delivery room! When I visited the Reichstag in October, a guide told us that once a visitor showed him his birth certificate with 'Reichstag Berlin' as place of birth.

When I was in Berlin in the 1970s, I did see the Reichstag in passing but didn't really look at it, it was only a ... more

Sportful but unnecessary

Advantages: It's quiet an experience!
Disadvantages: Won't enjoy it without taken along friends who keep company with you.

...until I finally visited the Reichstag building with my family. After all, the sights of your own city are the one's you visit at last! But in March 2001 we actually did it*g* The Reichstag is where the Bundestag, the Lower House of German Parliament, holds a meeting, where discussions take place, where important decisions are made. And loads of people, tourists same as folks from Berlin, want to see it. Main attraction: The big glass astrodome (right ...
...about important occurrences in the Reichstag while its existence by foto boards on the dome's bottom. Or get an equally good prospect over Tiergarten and all the new bombastic buildings the politicans "wanted to need" (you'll wonder how much you can do without having the cash for doing it!) on the broad flat roof. That ist even better than the dome. My opinion... There also is a restaurant, I think. But it probably is much too expensive! To sum ...

The Glass Dome of the Partliament

Advantages: Impressive architecture
Disadvantages: No

...central train station is the Reichstag German Parliament. The glass dome at the roof of the German parliament, designed by Norman Foster, gives you a bird's eye view of the city. The dome with its mirrored central funnel symbolizes that the German government keeps no secrets from its people. At the entrance of the parliament, displayed the quote Dem deutschen Volke(meaning To the German people), another indication of democracy in Germany. There is ...
...The good thing about the Reichstag is that there is no admission charge. However, be prepared to wait for at least an hour as they require you to go through security and have your bags checked. Also, it's better to visit it in the summer. There are no shelter outside the parliament and we literally waited in the cold for almost two hours!!! ...

The Gate of Division and Unification

Advantages: A must-go place in Berlin, good for those interested in history of Germany
Disadvantages: no

Close to the Reichstag is the Brandenburg gate, which has become the most important landmark of Berlin. Remember the video that was shown before the match begins for World Cup 2006? It was featured in there. It is not just a scene for Berlin itself, personally I think it is the best monument that represents Germany. It used to be the scene of milliary processions and parades. When the Wall went up, it was left in a no-man's land. It is also one of the many places when the Wall was first taken down. Therefore, it has its place in history in Germany as the gate where the West and the East side of the city came together again and symbolizes both the division and unification of Germany. Personally I would love to come back to visit again- a reminder of the importance of looking back at our history. On the road close to the gate ...

Review of Brandenburger Tor

Siegessäule

Advantages: Great View
Disadvantages: Lots of stairs

The Siegessäule literally means victory column when translated into English. This 69 metre tall column is topped by an 8 metre tall goddess of victory which was placed there to celebrate the Prussian victory over France in the War of 1871. The Siegessäule was originally commissioned to celebrate the victory over Denmark in the War of 1864. It was subsequently extended after the victories against Austria and France in 1868 and 1871. The Siegessäule is situated in the middle of the main roundabout leading towards the Reichstag and can be seen from a great distance as you walk through the Tiergarten towards it. The Siegessäule was moved by the Nazi government in 1938 from its original position outside the Reichstag. It was to be the beginning of Hitler's great victory avenue to celebrate germany's total victory in WWII ...

Review of Siegessäule

What an amazing city!

Advantages: Beautiful city, so much to see and do, excellent transport
Disadvantages: None!

a double-decker train a few times and was in awe, I'd never seen one before. You can get just about anywhere with the public transport in Berlin, it is so easy to use. The sights Brandenburg Gate We saw this twice, once during the day then another time at night. Just so we could see it all lit up. It really is an amazing piece of architecture. It's huge, it's a lot bigger than it looks in pictures. It's really easy to get to, there are lots of signs pointing the way for you. This is a real must-see if you visit Berlin. Reichstag Another must-see when visiting Berlin! It's a truly astonishing building and all the history associated with it is so interesting. I love how they've mixed old with new with the dome at the top of the building. The dome is amazing too, they have walkways spiralling upwards within the glass ...
