It had been a long time until I finally visited the Reichstag building with my family. After all, the sights of your own city are the one's you visit at last! But in March 2001 we actually did it*g*
The Reichstag is where the Bundestag, the Lower House of German Parliament, holds a meeting, where discussions take place, where important decisions are made. And loads of people, tourists same as folks from Berlin, want to see it. Main attraction: The big glass astrodome (right word?), which is built in the middle of the roof and from which you have a great, wide prospect over the city (if nice wheather*g*!). And so: That much time and patience would be needed was obvious at the outset. - And in fact we were waiting for long! I think it was about 1 1/4 hours when the doors opened for us. The queue reached the street (distance of about 30m) although curved and although wheather was'nt best! You see, you better should take along at least one companion to talk to and to capture the children who kill time by playing catch just to the street and climbing on the broad stone balustrade. Dynamic actions like these will surely keep you warm!*g* Also you'll need a warm coat because it is very drafty in front of the building, also in summer. But this waiting time can be the real experience of your visit (with comparing historical knowledge or defending together against pressing forward fellow men...) so please take it with a bit of humour! It CAN be funny! Furthermore, salespersons of Berlin spare with you: While you're waiting, you may buy delicate pretzels, listen to nice music and - don't you need a city map?
And then, with this terribly disturbing pain in your legs*g*, the doors in front of you open and you are finally allowed to enter. 40-50 persons do with you, the door closes - you are awaiting another door to open. But fast the doorman welcomes you and even apologises to you for the time problem of the "organizers". Nice. 50 persons enter the lounge, pleased about the warmth in there. But then the next shock: You have to grab all your metallic materials, let the security shine through them and after that pass an electric eye (no idea what the correct word is for this). Really funny is what follows: The next queue! This time in front of an elevator. It brings you - and MANY others, scary! - up to the flat roof. There you have to accept another draught of cold air before reaching the famous astrodome. Yes, you got it!
In there, you have the possibility to wander onto the spiral way up to the top and meanwhile see over kilometers of Germany's beautiful capital. Who does'nt like the sensible vibrations in the dome can just become informed about important occurrences in the Reichstag while its existence by foto boards on the dome's bottom. Or get an equally good prospect over Tiergarten and all the new bombastic buildings the politicans "wanted to need" (you'll wonder how much you can do without having the cash for doing it!) on the broad flat roof. That ist even better than the dome. My opinion... There also is a restaurant, I think. But it probably is much too expensive!
To sum up: You'll need companions, maybe warm clothes, lots of patience and above all loads of time. And because of this last point you may leave this visit out of your planning if you only have a weekend or so in Berlin. There you could learn about German politicans and there vasting lifestyle but not much about the townspeople ...
Visiting hours are from 8-22 o'clock every day. Free entry. You can declare visitations in groups and will be guided through another door (oh, how frustrating to see one schoolclass after the other enter while you are waiting and waiting and waiting!!)
Finished. This was my first opinion on ciao UK. Whew. I needed the dictionary more often as I've thought... Hopefully it is not so bad! Hey, I'd really like to hear a bit feedback and get entries in my guestbook!
