Arriving in Amsterdam a few hours later than planned is never good, especially when you have not booked a hotel in advance. Luckily, one of my friends had recommended this hotel to me, and they had a room available that we could have.
The RembrandtSquare Hotel is situated about 10-15mins walk from the Central Train station. We got a taxi there, but I would advise against this. Amsterdam seem to have some of the highest taxi costs that I've ever seen. The 5-10 minute journey (through some minorly busy traffic) cost us 30 euros. I'm not quite sure how the cost was justified, but I suppose we can be thankful that we got there safely when it was already quite late at night.
The hotel is located above a cafe/bar called "Cafe Smokey". There is a small side entrance to the right of the cafe, and then you go up a flight of stairs to the reception. The two receptionists that I saw both spoke perfect English, and their knowledge of the surrounding area was very useful.
We were booked into a double room, which cost us 90 euros for one night, but it included a delightful breakfast in one of the downstairs cafes the next morning. I'm sure that we could have got a cheaper price, but when you arrive late on a Friday night, you really don't have too many options!!
The room itself was spacious and contained a large double bed, a large wardrobe, a table and two chairs. Smoking was permitted in the rooms, but if you wanted to smoke anything other than tobacco, you were asked to do it elsewhere. Bathroom facilities were good, but they were shared with another room. I was assured by the staff that they do have en-suite rooms available, but these rooms were already booked up.
Downstairs from the hotel, Cafe Smokey is a great place to chill out and relax. They serve numerous alcoholic drinks, including the local favourite Heineken. They also sell cannabis if you so wish, and it's one of the only places that I saw in town where you could have a drink and a some at the same time. The pool tables are also handy if you have come along with a group of mates.
Opposite the hotel is the Escape club, where many famous DJs appear each week. We were lucky enough to see a few of our favourite House DJs.
Overall, I'd say that this was a good place to stay, as long as you don't mind the noise of a busy area. There was some loud music from a few of the bars till the early hours of the morning, but if you're party people then this shouldn't be a problem. I would definately not recommend bringing children to this hotel. The area is not suitable for children at all, and you'd do far better taking them to a quieter area.
Incidentally the charming Irish ownder of the Hotelm told us that he also owns Cafe Smokey downstairs, Club Smokey down the road and the backpacking hostel Durty Nelly's which is in the red light district.
