In the words of the writer himself, Jonathon Larson, “Rent is about a community celebrating life, in the face of death and AIDS at the turn of the century”. This pop/rock musical is a modern take on Puccini’s opera, La Boheme, replacing the 19th Century threat of tuberculosis with the late Twentieth Century threat of AIDS.
Despite the fact that this musical deals with some very serious issues, including homelessness and AIDS, the musical as a whole has a very positive feel to it. The message that it promotes is to live life for the moment and celebrate it- the curtain falls to the sound of the entire cast singing “No day but today” and this is the philosophy of the show. It is made all the more poignant by the fact that Jonathon Larson himself died unexpectedly the day before his show was due to open off-Broadway. He never got to see the applauding audiences or read the rave reviews that his show inspired from critics and the general theatre-going public but his work continues to delight audiences around the world.
The plot centres on a group of friends living in a grungy, bohemian district of New York, the main storyline of the show being the love story of Mimi, a drug addict dying of AIDS, and Roger, who is also HIV positive. The show features a whole host of other interesting characters including Mark, an amateur filmmaker who lives with Roger; Angel, a drag queen who (yep, you’ve guessed it!) is dying of AIDS, and Maureen, a leather clad lesbian performance artist. The characters are well drawn, especially Mimi, who seems sexy and outwardly confident but intensely vulnerable and yearning to be loved. The plot follows La Boheme very closely but with a (rather cheesy) twist at the end.
The songs are fantastic- very pop orientated with a wide variety of styles (ballads, tangos, rock songs etc.), which suits the setting and storyline (don’t expect Les Miserables type songs!), including Seasons of Love, Another Day, I’ll Cover You, Without You, La Vie Boheme and Your Eyes. I bought the soundtrack before I saw the show (always a risk!) and it has become one of my most treasured CDs. The show won a Tony Award in 1996 for Best Score (as well as three other Tony’s including Best Musical, a Pulitzer Prize for Best American Drama and a New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical) and has been incredibly well received by the critics as well as the general public.
In terms of set and costume design, there is nothing elaborate to detract from the performances of the actors, leaving the songs and message of the play to stand alone and speak for themselves. This is not a Phantom of the Opera type show that needs to hide the fact that its music is rather sub-standard (much as I love Phantom, the tunes are all slight variations on operatic classics) behind impressive sets and magnificent costumes.
As you have probably gathered already, this show is not particularly suitable for children, with lines such as “To sodomy, it’s between God and me- to S&M!”, but I think that this is a fantastic show for adults and teenagers with a really strong positive message- to enjoy and celebrate life. The running time is 2 hours and 45 minutes (long enough to get your money’s worth but not so long you start fidgeting/ falling asleep!)

Advantages: top songs and top performances Disadvantages: Adam Rickitt wears too many clothes!
...glamorous surroundings of Leicester.
Rent is currently on tour across the UK. It's a musical and covers two main issues - the impact of AIDS and the 1980s New York rent riots. However it is one of those shows where it doesn't really pay dividends to concentrate on the plot, you are much better off switching your brain off and enjoying the ride.
The story focuses around Mark (Adam Rickitt), a filmmaker, and his flatmate Roger (Damien Flood), a rock ... ...as they protest over spiralling rent costs and suffer from the impact of HIV and AIDS.
Sounds cheery, eh? Well, it's not as depressing as it sounds, and even though Rent deals with a lot of serious issues it never gets weighed down in melancholy or over-sentimental claptrap. There is always a rousing "Things Can Only Get Better"-type anthem just around the corner. There are a lot of strong ballads throughout the show, but these are equally matched ...

Great show!!!!!!! This was he first ever show i went to see when i first moved over to NYC so it holds a special place in my heart and also because it was mine and my boyfriends first date so to speak!!! awwww! lol
Its a very explosive show with one very very cathcy song "500, 25,000, 600 minutes..........." or at least there the words i sing! and with the entire cast singing the song it really blows you away and makes a real impact.
With set and ... ...80's which is what they were going for and really acheived it. th set being quite basic but effective, it was it needed to be for the show it really was on the actors to pull out the performance because unlike alot of braodway shows they didn't have a big, impressive moving set to help guide them along. All kinds of stars have come and gone through this show, most not known to the Uk audience but big in america.
With simplistic style yet cntroversial ...

T/P – costs between £5.50 and £7.35 per day and the same liability reduction amount apply as above.
PAI (Personal accident insurance) which costs £4.75 per day and provides cover for accidental death, injury and medical expenses for renter and the passengers.
RFL – Vehicle registration fee charged at 95p per day.
All vehicles should be provided with a full tank of petrol, and you must return the car the same, or you will be charged at a very high fuel bill. Always check the fuel gauge reading before driving away and if its not full go back into the office, so that a note can be entered on to the rental agreement. This happened to me once when I rented a car for my holiday, but had the advantage on knowing to check first. Another thing is to always check that the car is not damaged, even small scratches ...

Never did I think I would have to or be able to drive in a foreign country but recently due to being duped by my best friend I had to.

Whilst this review is about Europa Rent a car I booked my rental through a broker Carjet.com so the website description and booking procedure actually refers to Carjet.com NOT Europa's website itself. The rest of the review and opinions refer to Europa Rent a Car.
A Bit More Info
Ok now I think its only fair to point out that Carjet.com is simply a broker. They use different car hire companies dependant on the place you are hiring from.
The car hire company in question at Palma was Europa Goldcar Rent a car - this review is actually about them not the website for the broker.

Do Not Rent From Avis.
I booked a car on supercheapcar.com and it should have cost me $129 dollars for 2 days. I ended up not being able to rent a car. Here's what happened.
Avis are crap. Never again. I'll put each seperate mess up they had in a time line so you don't have to digest all of it at once, as I did.
11:15am
I get there, after my flight and have to wait 15-20 minutes to get service. That was fine.
11:35am
I get to the desk the man tells me I am unable to pay the car due to there policies of same name driver/card holder. (this was my fault, I had no idea they had that policy and had booked the car with my fathers' card).
Again that was fine. I had a check card with BofA so he took that and my drivers licence. Clerk: "I'm sorry, we need to hold a deposit of 400 dollars due to our under 25 policy." Cash which I had on me ...
