Bratislava

Advantages: It's a bustling, enjoyable city
Disadvantages: People don't know how good it is!

I went to Bratislava while en-route from Austria to Hungary. I was really surprised at how civilised it was, I thought it would be an old ghost town but it was totally the opposite - it had massive motorways going into the city which had hardly any cars on at all, so there was no traffic to get held up in and in the centre there were quite a few tower block flats but there were also some nice historical sites to visit. On top of all the history, there were tonnes of high street shops, including a McDonalds and Tesco's!!! It was really comforting to see homely things like that when you're in a strange city. ** Downside ** Bratislava is a lovely city and I would definitely go back and spend more than a day there, however there were a lot of beggars and they weren't just sitting on the streets waiting for money, they were yelling ...

Keep your Costa Brava - I'm off to Bratislava

Advantages: Relatively quiet compared to it's near neighbours Prague, Vienna and Budapest
Disadvantages: Ironically it sufferes in some respects from not being as well-visited as the above

On Saturday May 1st Slovakia will finally join the European Union, one of 10 states to do so. The names of the lesser known of these states are becoming more familiar so I though it would be a good idea to update my review and maybe inspire a few people to visit a city I fell in love with. For years Bratislava had to play second fiddle to Prague as Czecholslovakia's main city. As a result, fewer people have visited this city and this has affected the city in both positive and negative ways. Now that Bratislava is the capital of an independent Slovakia, has it's time come? The city is often visited as part of a Danube cruise or coach tour of the region also taking in the cities of Vienna and Budapest but is slowly becoming popular as a destination in it's own right. Bratislava is situated about an hour from Vienna by road ...

The Hotel Danube, Bratislava

Advantages: Central to the town and overlooking the Danube.
Disadvantages: A bit expensive. The sauna and pool are closed until december 2007.

The Hotel danube in Bratislava , overlooking the beautiful blue river danube ,or donau, as it is known in Germany. It is spacious and scrupulously clean .The staff are friendly and professional with an excellent command of the English language. It has a swimming pool and gym facilities although these are currently closed for renovation until december 2007. There is an excellent restaurant, conference rooms and they have a massive grand piano in the foyer with a resident musician.Luxury soaps, body lotion, shampoos are provided and there is a safe in each room , also, an essential item, a hair dryer. There is covered parking accessed with a card. It is situated right in the heart of the town which is buzzing with vitality and has an air of euphoria after the years of communist oppression. Bratislava itself is emerging from the shadows ...
