Advantages: History Art Beauty Disadvantages: 2,500,000 Other Visitors
...not be many other places of this size that have found favour with so many great artists. Once you have seen Saint Paul it is easy to understand why they came and others continue to come.
Saint Paul is less than eight miles from Nice Airport and a taxi would cost about £25. If driving take the Cagnes-sur-Mer exit off Autoroute 8 and then follow the road to Vence. Vence is itself a charming village but is mostly ignored because of its near neighbour.
Saint Paul called by its three hundred residents, and many others, "the most beautiful village in the world" has some justification for the claim but on balance I think that there are many that beat it to this title. Advantages: Ridgeway Village, North East Derbyshire Disadvantages: Poor Bus Service
...the way. John Haslam was a Scythe maker that lived and worked in the Village during the 1850's. He had a Donkey which he used to load up with Scythe Blades and when fully laden this Donkey would set off unaided and deliver these to several of the Forges further down the Valley. The Methodist Church dates from 1805 whilst the Church of St John was erected in 1840. Both are extremely popular with the locals and their services are usually full.
The School, Ridgeway Primary School was built in 1873.
Within the Centre of the Village there is a very well kept Memorial...

Advantages: Lovely Views, Lots Of History Disadvantages: A Little Off The Beaten Track
...writes that he came to Bolsterstone to play Bowls. This was probably on the level area of grassland known as Court Fields. He also adds that although he lost the game he did have Dinner and spent 4d on Ale. This would suggest that there was some kind of Inn in the Village even back then, although this date pre-dates the origin of Bolsterstone's only current Public House, the Castle Inn by over a century.
St Mary's Church is the most prominent feature of the Village of Bolsterstone. It stands on elevated ground above the Village and can therefore be seen from many miles around. This current Church dates only from 1879 but stands on a site that has been used as a place of Worship for many centuries.
Historical records show that there was a small ancient Chapel on this site that was in a bad state of repair by the mid 1700's. Consequently...
