Sunshine, sardines and spoilt fishing villages in the Algarve

Advantages: Sunshine, beaches and scenic rocky coves, interesting inner towns
Disadvantages: Irish bars, fast food and tacky tourist shops

Just in case there is anyone who doesn't know, the Algarve is on the coast in Southern Portugal. Most tourists get there by flying to Faro and many of the cheaper airlines fly into Faro. Therre are about a dozen options for hire cars at the Airport so you can select your favourite comapany and then drive off to find your accomodation in the Algarve. Driving seems safe and with the help of our Tomtom we found our way around easily rememberring of course to drive on the right side of the road. The Algarve; Having been unimpressed with our accommodation (Albufiera Jardim 1) and stayed in for an appointment with our representative from Resort Point Services or Resort Promotions ( another long tale of woe) we decided that we were not going to be put off the area by this and decided we would explore. ALBUFIRA: On Sunday after our abortive ...

Sun, Sea And Sand.

Advantages: Cheap, endless entertainment, friendly people.
Disadvantages: Be careful not to get burnt.

I have known there to be odd occasions when the sun doesn't come out, but it's the same with anywhere you go and it does also depend on the time of year. Faro is the district capitol of The Algarve it is where the airport stands. The road conditions are unfortunately quite poor in Faro. The drivers are reasonably sensible with lorry drivers being the exception. Do be careful if you are driving in Portugal, as it is very different to driving in the UK. Especially since you won't know the area. There are signposts, but they tend to be not very clear and when your concentrating on the road they are easily missed so it is advisable to have another ...

The Monaco Hotel Faro

Advantages: close to airport and inexpensive
Disadvantages: some aircraft noise

The Monaco is situated in the Montenegro district of Faro only a stones throw from the airport. It is an ideal location if you have an early morning flight and would like a nights sleep before traveling. The hotel runs a regular shuttle to the airport for no extra charge and it is possible when checking in to arrange your own personal time if the timetable does not suit. The hotel is very comfortable and not very expensive. All rooms are pleasantly furnished and ensuite with tv and telephone plus mini bar and many have balconies. The outdoor pool is situated in pleasant gardens and enjoys sun most of the day. There is also an indoor pool and health spa open to residents. The dining room was being refurbished on my last visit in May 2007 so it was not possible to dine but on previous visits I have enjoyed some excellent meals ...
