About 2 hours east of Santiago are the ski resorts of La Parva, El Colorado and Valle Nevado. All 3 resorts are connected (you can ski between them if you have the right pass) and there are plenty of runs and some world-class off-piste. You can make the trip up and down from Santiago in a day but its worth taking two (at least) if you can ski or snowboard. As well as the resorts, there is a small town called Farrellones located next to the resort of El Colorado. You can walk from Farrellones to the lowest lift at el colorado, from where the lift attendants will let you on if you promise to buy a lift pass when you get off - at the resort proper. Be warned though - it's a button lift.
You can hire ski and snowboard equipment at any of the resorts, but neither equipment hire nor lift passes come cheap. Ski-ing is very much for the elite ...

Advantages: Always one close by, quick turn out, children are welcome and catered for. Disadvantages: Toilets can be quite disturbing, not all dishes taste as good they are described.

As with most of the Harvester's I have visited, there is usually ample free parking at the rear of the establishment. However on Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch times these places are heaving with customers, so avoid the crowds, go early and if possible ring and reserve a table. was a lot of people in it there was still lots of room to swim. It was a salt water pool and did hurt your eyes but we got used to it very quickly. They were very strict with inflatables in the pool and pool security were there all the time, but that just made you feel safe. We did have to reserve sun beds as there was none when we went down on our first day, but it was the school holidays.
The restaurants were fantastic. We ate at the chinese 3 or 4 times, the food and service was good. On the sea front is another small snack bar where you can get fresh orange juice and home made ice cream. You can sit here watching the waves crashing onto the beach, fantastic view!
There was access to the internet for the children in reception although they did have to queue sometimes to use it and there were table tennis tables in the gardens that ...
