Manufacturer's product description
A few kilometres far from Sorrento, the Restaurant Belmare is situated in one of the most suggestive place of the Sorrentine Peninsula, overlooking the deep blue sea of the Gulf of Sorrento, a sea that has been enchanting voyagers from all over the world for millenniums. The landscape is absolutely unique: the Vesuvius, Ischia, Procida, Capri. A sunset from our terraces is an unforgettable experience that you will keep in your heart forever.
...nationalities were represented but very much in the minority to the coach loads of tourists from the UK and Ireland.
The Geography
The Bay of Sorrento is a lot larger than I had expected. My original preconception was of a small sleepy Italian fishing village that would provide a useful starting point to explore the local areas of interest. A travel book and a few reviews on Ciao later that opinion was quickly changed. Sorrento itself is made up of five communes with Sorrento Town itself providing the main shopping and commercial centre.
The centre of Sorrento is Piazza Tasso which is bisected by the Corso d' Italia which is the main thoroughfare and in the evenings is closed to traffic to allow the locals and visitors alike to parade along in all their finery. Advantages: Interesting town, great weather, good base to explore the area Disadvantages: Traffic and pollution
...these as the proprietors aren’t likely to wait for you to come to them, but will encourage you inside whether that was your intention or not. Marina Grande is quieter than the rest of Sorrento, and consequently prices are a bit steeper here.
Marina Piccola, at the northern end, is the main ferry terminal for catching hydrofoils to Capri and Naples. It’s very busy, but still quite picturesque. There is a regular bus service (more on that later) to and from the town of Sorrento, so it’s not necessary to climb the stairs that lead up from the marina to the town.
The stretch of shoreline between the two marinas is taken up with various decked lidos for swimming and sunbathing, and cafes and restaurants. It’s impossible to walk from one marina to the other without going back up into the town though, as we discovered to our cost. There are stairs...

Advantages: Beautiful, picturesque, loads to see, hot hot hot Disadvantages: not enough time to see everything
...Having holidayed in Sorrento the last couple of years I cannot recommend it enough. there is something for everyone in Sorrento and the surrounding area.
Take a trip to Pompeii and Herculaneum for a wonderful experience. Pompeii is much larger than imagined and we visited it over two days but don't go on the organised tours which can be costly. Take the local train, it runs half hourly and only costs a couple of euros. Take the train to Herculaneum which is much smaller but better preserved. The trains stop very near to the excavation sites.
For a slice of how the other half live take a ferry or hydrofoil across to the beautiful island of capri- you never know you might spot a hollywood star!
The Amalfi coast is renowned for being the most beautiful coastline in Europe and it certainly lives up to its reputation. Visit Positano...
