· Product Information

Restaurant Petit Bonheur, Maastricht

Situated behind the gate of an old farmhouse, everything has the taste, smell and feel of France. It is immediately apparent why this restaurant was so named - it is a `little... more...paradise.' On sunny late-summer evenings, you can allow yourself a culinary treat in the `cour,' the attractive courtyard of this historic 17th century building.

My Kinda town - Maastricht is

Advantages: Small, friendly, very pretty
Disadvantages: Not easiest desination to get to from the UK

Most people in the UK have only heard of Maastricht in connection with the EC treaty, they couldn't tell you what it's about, nor could they tell you even which country it's in! The city is tucked in the bottom left hand corner of the Netherlands, and surrounded on three sides by Belgium and Germany. It's also very close to France and Luxembourg is only a short car journey away. Don't make the mistake of thinking it's in Holland - that's in the north of the Netherlands, it's the capital of Limburg provence. I attended a business conference in the beginning of March 2003, and quite by accident managed to land in town at exactly the same time as 'carnival' - which they take very seriously - more about this later. The old town is about one kilometre square, and is a maze of narrow pedestrianised streets there's a bunch of old ...

STOP......Maastricht ahead.

Advantages: Beautiful city, everything at walking distance
Disadvantages: maybe the weather??

, the main square in the city. There are shops all along the way. Many old buildings still remain. Around the Vrijthof you will find a maze of cute small streets with shops, restaurants and bars. Under the church next to the Vrijthof you can visit the tomb of Saint Servaas, who was bishop of Maastricht and died in the year 384. The treasure chamber is right next to it and worth a visit. Do not forget to go and see the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein, a beautiful square where you can peacefully take a drink or a good meal in one of the many bars and restaurants, right next to the shopping area. From there, for those who need more peace and silence, you can walk to the city park in 4 minutes. Walk past the Hellgate, an impressive part of the old city wall around Maastricht, which can be found next to the Maas River. It is named Hellgate because here ...

A Disappointing Read (Petite Anglaise - Catherine Sanderson)

Advantages: Nice descriptions of Paris and Parisian Life
Disadvantages: Dislikable main 'character'

NB - the specific criteria don't really rate to the type of book that this is, so I've just answered in the middle for all of them - please ignore the answers, thanks! -Introduction and background information- Catherine Sanderson is a thirty-something Brit who fell in love with France whilst she was at school and moved to Paris more than ten years ago. In July 2004, she discovered the world of blogging on the internet and her pseudonym Petite Anglaise was born. She wrote about her own daily trials and tribulations on her blog and it soon became a massive internet hit, with thousands of regular readers and rave reviews in the national newspapers. Petite Anglaise the book was published in hard back in 2008, although it is the paperback edition (published by Penguin Books in February 2009) that I'm reviewing here. The book is ...
