Getting to Canada on the cheap

Advantages: Cheap!
Disadvantages: Food is pretty horrendous

...holiday in Canada, flying with Air Transat. This was an airline I'd not heard of before, and in fact I didn't know I'd even booked with them, because I'd booked through a website called Globespan.com, and thought they were the actual airline. As I have now discovered, Air Transat are actually a charter airline, and you book with them via travel agents, including Globespan. Despite being a charter airline, they have a scheduled service throughout ...
...Air Transat also fly out of various Belgian, French, German, Irish, Italian, Dutch and Portugese airports, as well as north American and central American airports. ----------Frequency--------- Frequency of flights depends upon the airports and the time of year - for example, at the moment flights from Birmingham to Toronto are every 3 days, flights from London to Toronto are daily, but to Vancouver are only 3 or 4 days a week. You can search their ...

...travel home to the UK. Air Transat. So off to my trusty computer I went and searched for the website. Air Transat has a web site, primarily aimed at the Canadian passenger a bi-lingual country. The opening page offers a choice of viewing language: English or French. On the main homepage, is the heading “Travelling from Europe” and five country links. France, Italy, Germany Holland and UK. Did I leave my baggage unattended at any time? Etc. and wished me a good flight. Looking good I thought and proceeded to venture into the chaos of the Gatwick departure lounge. Due to the combining the Manchester and Gatwick flights embarkation was delayed 1 ...

An airline we'd definitely use again!

Advantages: Great cabin crew
Disadvantages: Limited due to being a budget airline; food wasn't so great

...travelling to Canad recently was Air Transat. In all honesty, we had no dealing with them apart from getting on and off the plane, as everything was pre-booked and pre-paid with the travel operators beforehand. We arrived and booked in just over 3 hours before the flight left Gatwick for Canada, and this was smooth and painless, despite an employee going through the line saying they had overbooked and did anyone want to volunteer to postpone their ...
...right up until we left Air Transat's care. To sum up, everything they did was lovely and of high efficiency. They are a budget airline in many ways, so I am aware of limitations and that certain standards may not be the same as other, more expensive airlines. The food wasn't great, and the TVs were shared. There were limits on the service only because there were narrow aisles and only a certain speed they could serve the food, but no one else on ...

...the the Canadian charter company's Air Transat were offering the best deal and I booked with them. Apart from saving money the other advantage of flying Air Transat was that I could fly to Vancouver without having to change planes (I'm a strong believer that if you don't change planes you have more chance of getting your luggage at the other end and less chance of being delayed). Although I was going to Victoria it was much cheaper to get a ferry ...
...11th. Being a charter Air Transat could not help me change the flight seat (and I understand this from the booking conditions) so I had no choice but to buy a new ticket from Air Transat. Well unless you left earth for a day you will know that September 11th was the awful terrorist attack on America. There I was stood with my Air Canada boarding card for my connection to Vancouver (a treat from a friend) when all flights were cancelled. Air Canada ...

Value-for-Money Flights

Advantages: Very cheap - Half price of British Airways
Disadvantages: Smaller seats; No fancy extras like with BA

Normally, my parents book flights well in advance, and up until now we have always flown British Airways. This Summer, however, we left it much later before booking a holiday, partly because many people say it is cheaper to book late, and partly because we had already booked a flight to Rome in October, making the Summer holiday slightly less important (normally we stay at home during October and have our main holiday in Summer). However it soon ...
...decent holiday at any price, when we went to numerous travel agents with no luck. Finally, we settled with what was probably the best option, which was a charter flight with AirTransat to Toronto, Canada (Departing from Glasgow, A bit over 2 hours away from where I live in Aberdeen). I was not looking forward to the flight as I'd heard that you had to pay for drinks, that you had to purchase the headphones and that the seats were cramped (which ...

the nightmare that was AirTransat

Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: everything else

I survived AirTransat--but barely. In order to get a cheap flight between London and Toronto, I bought a ticket that was part of a charter flight block. Most of the passengers were on a package holiday. Check-in was chaos in Toronto. One passenger almost got in a fight with an AirTransat employee when he found out about the excess baggage charge and the extra line he had to stand in. I had to do this too (the charge and the line, not the fight). ...
...my baby on the flight (which I refused to do). A supervisor came and spoke to me. I politely told her I would continue to nurse my child, and I would call the Canadian authorities when I returned. They eventually left me alone without treating me like a hijacker. Once in London I tried to get a return ticket on the major British airline, but it was three times more expensive. So. . . the return check-in at Gatwick was, if possible, even worse than ...

So I'll never fly Air Transat again....

Advantages: Got me to my Destination on Time
Disadvantages: Slow Check In, Miserable Cabin Crew, Rubbish Food

For the first time, I was travelling to Vancouver Canada on my own to visit Family, so obviously I was looking forward to it. I was travelling on flight TS503 from London Gatwick (LGW) to Vancouver (YVR). The flight was scheduled to depart at 16:05 GMT and arrive at 17:55 PT. Arriving at Gatwick always puts me in a Holiday mood, so I made sure to be there at 13:00, the time suggested by the airline. Unfortunately, the check in queue was so long ...
...Duty Free before I had to board the plane. This was due to only 4 check in assistants dealing with 325 passengers. Organised, eh?! The plane looked and seemed nice - Airbus A300-200 and was decorated nicely. Shame we couldn't have had seat back TV's, but what do I expect from a no-frills airline?! The seat seemed comfortable at first, but 5 hours later, that was no way the case! At least I had a view out of my window, which is worth the extra 7pounds ...

Cheap - But at What Price?

Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Rude Staff. Low Baggage Allowance. Third World Service.

Most people are attracted to Air Transat based on price. Fair enough, their flights are always much cheaper than the scheduled airlines, and slightly cheaper than Canada 3000 (but not much). But for the money saved, there is a big compromise. Check-in has usually been painless for me, so long as you keep the luggage under the sacred 20kg limit, or else expect to either cry or pay (or both). I usually keep an extra carry-on bag hidden from them on ...
...still fly Air Transat now and then, but only because I am cheap when it comes to transatlantic flights. Canada 3000 is somewhat better (although still rude), and Virgin Atlantic is by far the best (even if it means driving from NYC to Toronto!). But Air Transat...be warned. ...

Two Conflicting Experiences

Advantages: I got There. Some New Aircraft
Disadvantages: Some Very old aircraft. Staff who can't talk to each other.

...Canada last year and flew Air Transat there and back. The flights gave me two very different experiences of the company. From what I can gather Air Transat is a charter airline based in Canada that also do some scheduled flights. I flew out in a chartered Airbus. It was brand new and the staff were obviously very excited to be on it. The airhostesses could only speak pigeon English- odd for a Canadian airline flying to and from the UK. They were ...
...it was a dry flight due to the nature of company I was working for, but the coke and orange juice kept on coming. All in all outbound was 8/10. The homeward flight was totally different. This time the aircraft was a knackered old Tri-star. The seats were worn out and very rickety. The toilet doors didn't close properly. Basically the plane was a shed. I doubt the galley was working properly because the food served was either burnt or cold. The staff, ...

I would highly recommend reserving a seat (even though it costs $20) unless you want to be stuck in the middle seat for 8 hours! Cheap and Cheerful Air Transat flight to Canada

Advantages: Cheap, friendly staff, can get extra leg room seats
Disadvantages: food, have to pay for some drinks & extra snacks, 3 seats have no leg room

I flew with Air Transat from Newcastle Airport for the first time to get me on my 6 week adventure to Canada. So how did I find them? Outbound Our outbound journey we arrived at Newcastle 2 hours before check in and sailed through very quickly, was very impressed with the service at the airport. The flight itself took off about 30 minutes late but with a tail wind we got into Toronto at exactly the right time, unfortunately I can't guarantee tail ...
...up for so long! Air Transat The facilities on Air transat were basic, only couple of large TV screens so if you wanted to watch a movie it is a bit hard to see, but in my opinion I can read on the flight or listen to music and catch a movie anytime so this didn't bother me. The food, well its airplane food never the best and have to say the chicken pasta on the return I took one look, one bite, then left it, not the best but I don't think any airplane ...

High value fare to Vancouver

Advantages: Value for money, customer service, fast flights
Disadvantages: online booking

...visit my American girlfriend via Air Transat, a French Canadian airline flying various routes from Europe to Canada. My first option would have been to go to Seattle, as it is closer to my girlfriends city. The prices in the high season are really expensive. I got this flight for 381GBP including taxes. The customer service was excellent. The plane was well staffed and the attentiveness high. The duty free was very cheap as well. I was so pleased ...
...for 375GBP with Thomas Cook in Vancouver. The only minor drawbacks are: You have to book through a travel agent, although it appears as though you can book online at the web site (www.transat.com); also there is a stopover in Calgary that is a bit tedious. The flights are only available in the Spring and Summer...the scheduled airlines are too competitive in the Low season. So, if you are having trouble getting a decent deal to the western United ...

After overcoming the drive at the airport the only differences i could see apart from the services from the two different airports was the baggage allowance. With economy at Air Canada i took 46kg checked baggage and 10Kg On-board, whereas in Air Transat (that is sometimes known as Thomas Cook in recent times) allows 20Kg checked baggage and 5Kg on-board per person. To be frank i couldnt get 46Kg worth ...

No leg room but gets you there on time!!

Advantages: cheap, films reasonably up to date, staff friendly
Disadvantages: no leg room, meals pretty poor

We fly with Air Transat to Calgary last month on a flight that goes from Gatwick - Calgary-Vancouver. We left very promptly from Gatwick and paid extra to choose our seats. We choose row 11 which I might warn you only has 1 window sort of behind you and otherwise a blank wall - so not the best for views but it is one row back from the exit which they use to get on and off the plane so great for getting off quickly and easily. The leg room is possibly ...
...the flights are cheaper than Air Canada for example. I found the food to be really basic, some pretty awful chicken and rice on the way out and pasta with tomato sauce and a few vegetables coming back. On a positive note I found the staff helpful and friendly and they did seem to come around reasonably frequently with water or orange juice (you have to pay for soft drinks or alcohol). Also the films shown were reasonably up to date (for UK people) ...
