Advantages Advantages Beaches, history, scenery, relaxation

Disadvantages Disadvantages Little nightlife (if that's what you are looking for)

Alghero is a wonderful town on an amazing island. I'm almost tempted to leave my review at that and let you discover the place for yourself, but I have a feeling you'd like to know a little bit more. So here are my recommendations, based on more than a dozen trips over the past couple of years. We even convinced my brother to buy a place there this summer! WHEN TO GO Alghero is great year round, but June to September are the warmest times. We have experienced 30 degree weather in the middle of October. It can get cool at night, even in summer, because there is so little cloud cover. It rarely ... more

Advantages Advantages Great beaches, great weather

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not too much to do but relax and enjoy

As you might already know, I can get a bit crazy about organizing trips. After one year of travels to Paris, Stockholm, La Rochelle, Paris again, and Copenhagen, I decided it was time for me to take a break: book some holiday with my boyfriend and forget all about schedules, waking up early, being at the museum at 10, staying until 12, having lunch for 35 minutes and head off to the next 1001 places on our "to do list". Time had come for a relaxing time. I booked two flight tickets to Alghero, Sardinia. Of course, even the most peaceful times require some planning. So for the month until we ... more

Advantages Advantages Busy town in Northern sardinia, good base

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Small airport

Alghero known in Latin as Algarium, is on the West coast of Sardinia, in the province of Sassari. The name is derived from something, which might be off-putting, as it means "the place of algae"! However, I thought it was a lovely little town and enjoyed my brief stay there. Alghero, the tourism capital of northern Sardinia, is a fascinating town of immense historical interest, which also has excellent beaches. It can be lively, vibrant and cosmopolitan in the holiday season when there are open markets, bars and restaurants, which cater for most tastes. There are quality hotels and apartments ... more

Advantages Advantages Amazing turquoise blue ocean, wonderful food, history, architecture GELATO!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Drivers have it in for pedestrians! Construction on the seafront

We needed sunshine and Ryan Air had VERY cheap airfares from the UK to Sardinia. Good question: where IS Sardinia (Answer: 10 miles from Corsica. And where is that? Answer: to the Left of Italy!) When we arrived, we first tried to find the bus that was to take us to the city centre (reminds me of John Lennon's nearsightedness: "What Bus?"). This is when we KNEW we had not studied the Italian language CD's enough! But everyone understood the word "taxi", so got in a queue/lined up for the next one... and waited... and waited. Finally a rather small cab turned up and we squished ourselves and ... more

Advantages Advantages Lovely beaches, fantastic food

Disadvantages Disadvantages Praying Mantis are on the loose!!! Entertainment all in Italian

I recently got married and it took us a while to pick the perfect place for a romantic honeymoon, eventually we chose Italy and Sardinia attracted our attention with it's beautiful beaches. We booked through Portland, who were very helpful and got the price down for us to £990 for a weeks half board stay. We flew with Austrius, who I have never heard of, but would recommend. There was plenty of leg room, which is a must for my new husband, and the breafast was great, a mini fry up, and a free champagne cocktail as the flight was slighlty delayed. Cocktails at 7 am, a great start to the ... more

Advantages Advantages Beautiful beaches, fantastic food, great sightseeing

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Italian Drivers, crowds

Was looking for a short break mainly beach based and used a specialist found on Teletext but next time I'd do it myself to reduce the cost. With Ryannair flights from Stansted so cheap it makes sense to go it alone and just book a hotel on line - there are plenty of decent search engines to find anything from a hostel to a 5*. We decided to hire a car from the Airport and it was a good move as we used it to get out and about a bit and use different beaches in the area such as Stintino which has beautiful white sand - opposite is Asinara Island which used to be a prison but is now a nature ... more

    Advantages Advantages excellent restaurants

    Disadvantages Disadvantages not cheap!

I travelled to Sardinia in June, somewhere I had always fancied going but never quite got round to it. We took advantage of a package deal which seemed like a good deal but in reality was no less than what we had expected to pay. We flew from Liverpool to Alghero and stayed at the Florida Hotel, Alghero on B&B basis . The flight was fine, on arrival a short transfer to the hotel (about 20 minutes) The Florida hotel is 3 star, located opposite the Lido beach with great views if you have a seafront view (these were extra). We had a rear facing room which was fine - a good sized balcony and quiet ... more

Advantages Advantages Close to Beach and Old Town.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not great to look at from outside, but good inside.

This Hotel The ALMA d ALGHERO is just the place for a short stay in Alghero. Location is fine, within short stone throw of the Beach and close enough to the Old Town to walk your dinner off. (about 20 min slow stroll). The rooms are clean and bright and the showers large enough for even large people. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast time there is a good range to choose from. Cerials, cheeses, meats breads, fruits, cakes and even a sausage heating machine. Nice little touches like the large bowl of apples placed in reception for the guests. We would certainly use this Hotel ... more

Advantages Advantages beautiful veiws, and great pizza...

Disadvantages Disadvantages you will never want to leave...

The best and cheapest way i found getting to this destination, is through ryanair, which takes you to Fertillia airport. We stayed in one of the many B and B's, this great place has to offer. The resort itself is beautiful seaside city, with postcard veiws on every corner in the old town. Once there you will find lots of things to do, wether it be a casual walk along the harbour, a drink or two in the gorgeous old town, or just chill out on the beach - which i found to be unbeleivably clean. The locals are friendly and welcoming. I found the prices of food and drink, quite average, it is worth ... more

Advantages Advantages Relaxing, nice pool area and beach, shuttle bus to Alghero.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hotel drinks quite expensive, pool water was very chlorinated.

I chose to go to Alghero, Sardinia after looking at Ryan Air's fly for a penny (+tax and charges which were low) site. I also wanted somewhere which will still have good weather in October. We were lucky because it was very hot for four of the five days we stayed. The Punta Negra hotel is just a short ride from the airport and cost about 20 euros by Taxi, the people behind us in the taxi queue were also going to the same hotel (realised only when we go to hotel reception) so worth asking if any one wants to share a taxi. We ate at the hotel that night as we arrived quite late and it was very ... more
