Advantages: Lots of routes available to Italy Disadvantages: Poor service and delays
...first experience of flying with Alitalia was not good. On the outward journey (to Milan, Malpensa) the aircraft looked decidedly old and in need of a good clean. It also had pretty uncomfortable seats.
After a half-hour delay we were underway. The service onboard was acceptable for the most part, but some cabin crew were rather rude. The was also confusion amongst passengers about using electronic equipment during the flight. Although it was clear ... ...severely, which seemed unreasobale with Alitalia lack of consistency in communicating its rules.
The return flight was also delayed. This may not be Alitalia's fault, but colleagues on British Airways flights at a similar time were not delayed. Other flights that day did not seem to be affected either.
In summary, it got you to Italy and back, but you could do much better for the price. If you do want to book flights on Alitalia, I recommend Opodo.co.uk ...

Advantages: Once you get going it's ok Disadvantages: Every single flight was delayed
I flew with Alitalia this on four flights this summer, and all four of them where either delayed or cancelled. They don't really tell you much about what's happening unless you go up and ask them, and if you're delayed in an Italian airport then there's nothing to do as there's only like 2 shops there that are really crap, and everything in thems like 5 times more than it is anywhere else. They gave us vouchers for food when one flight was cancelled, ... ...but with them. The only good thind was that on connecting flights if the frist one's delayed the chances are you wont miss the second if it's on Alitalia as the chances are it's been delayed to. Apart from all the delays, their service is pretty similar to other airlines. ...

...the charming sight of an Alitalia plane... that I turned out to be flying on within 2 hours.
The rust on the back was a bit off-putting.
The meal... OK. The service... Not bad.
The plane... Cramped (very)
It's a shame, because Italy is a nice country, but if you travel there on thier airline, it puts your holiday off to a bad start.
This company has real potential, but also has yet to realise it.
Come on Alitalia!

...in Linate to take the Alitalia flight for about 5 hours instead of the BA one. I thought she was mad with BA and I thougth she wanted to go back to Italy with Alitalia, but when we were in the air she told me when we go back to Italy we go with BA! By the way I'm still waiting the refund from BA! ...
