4 Stars Amman - a modern Arabic capital Review with images 28/04/2012

Advantages Advantages Insight into a modern Arab country

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not yet totally geared up to deal with the tourist need for info

"Eight degrees!?" "He did say eight?" The incredulity was an echoed whisper as we landed in the rain at Amman airport after the airline captain had just given us his local conditions update. "Eight degrees?" O.K. it was still only March, but it had been warmer than that when we left London. The cold was going to be an unexpected feature of our first few days in Jordan. Of course it can freeze in the desert at night, but we weren't in the desert. Yet. This was Amman. This was "the Middle East" which most of us had grown up knowing about from our bible stories and news bulletins (as broad a mix ... more

3 Stars Not overwhelmed by Amman Review with images 06/07/2007

    Advantages Advantages Cheap, cultural

Disadvantages Disadvantages Boring, dusty, leering men, lack of pavements

I was in Amman for some time with my job and I found it an interesting but also a very strange place! Getting there: I flew with Royal Jordanian from Heathrow. British Mediterranean also does direct flights. Return flights tend to cost around £300 but if you fly with an airline such as Romanian Airlines via Bucharest you can find flight as low as £200. The flight time is around four and a half hours. Arrival: I arrived early in the morning into Queen Alia International Airport. Everything was closed and we waited for our visas patiently. Baggage reclaim was better than the UK, quick and easy ... more

Amman is the city capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Its origins are dated back to the Neolithic age (about 6500 BC) as proved by the archaeological finds in the area. Amman, like Rome, lays on seven hills that here are called "Jabal". Amman has seen the rising and the falling of many civilizations. In the 3rd century BC its name was Rabath Ammon; then was dominated by the Assyrians followed by the Persians. The Greeks crossed the Aegean sea and subdued the Jordanians and called the city "Philadelphia". During the 1st century BC, Philadelphia was subdued by the Romans and became part ... more

Advantages Advantages The charm perhaps lies in its slight blandness

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not as much to do as Damascus or Cairo!

I arrived in Amman on a JET bus from Jordan's second city Irbid in the north. I was in my element, enjoying that "just crossed a border, in a new country" feel. The journey over from Galilee in Israel had been remarkably easy but in my true style, I managed to find a way of doing things difficultly. Arriving in the JET bus station on the outskirts of Amman, I was unaware that a new one was being used and although the previous bus station wasn’t actually on my old map, it clearly stated that it was 2km from the centre. Little did I know, that they’d moved it and I started walking towards what I ... more

Amman was known as Philadelphia by the romans who have left their mark here with many ruins to explore and cretainly one of the best preserved amphitheatres I have seen. This is in the downtown area of Amman and can easily be got to by Taxi, do get a Taxi from your Hotel asd they will ensure a good taxis that will treat you well, nevere ever pay more than £3 for a trip within the city!!. Make sure the meter is running too. Shopping in this city is a real delight. Disadvantages Disadvantages lots of sand :D

i was born here and have visited a few times since leaving when i was young. it is a very cultural city and the people will definitly eye you out if you look foreign. the men can indeed be leering but they never do any real damage. when it comes to shopping, don't be afraid to try and bargain with the shopkeepers, they will budge if you try hard enough. the food is delicious, so it would be smart to lose a few pounds before going to Amman. Mecca mall is great! Abdoon/Abdun mall has a beautiful cafe/resteraunt on the top floor with the best dessert. around the same are of abdun mall there is ... more

Advantages Advantages A good capital but I didn't find it very interesting

Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing much to do.

I went to Jordan for my family holiday and we went and stayed with some of our friends. I liked it a lot because I had so much fun. However there wasn't a lot to do because there the city didn't offer a lot. There weren't many things to do but if I stayed there for longer then I probably would have explored around and found something to do. I stayed for 4 days and I think that this time was OK but it wasn't as special as the days we had at aqaba and Wadi Rum. So if you have any ideas on going to places in the middle East then I strongly recommend that you go to Jordan but don't really spend ... more
